    Can you get the sack generally for been sick?

    A friend was threatened with the sack from his park time job for been very ill, he ended up in hospital having his appendix out. When he phoned in sick he was told that they know he's not sick and to get to work asap.

    This was after he asked for 1 day off last week which his supervisor said was ok to go to a wedding. He was then phoned by another superviser asking where he was and why he wasn't at work. And was told to get to work asap as he's not said anything about a wedding to him, he wasn't his supervisor or even in the same department so had no need to know and phone up demending for him to come in.

    Anyway after been told to get to work when he phoned in sick he basically said he couldn't come in which they took as him quitting and was told to get in and pick up his whatever form it is.

    It was only a students part time job in a shopping store, but wondered what rights he has to complain.

    Daft as it seems I think Father Benny Cake may be right in advising a "pragmatic" approach. Even as a footy fan I find all this fuss ridiculous. If someone just doesn't turn up or fails to phone in then they are absent and I believe should be docked pay.

    If they have a pattern of sickies why not have them in for a review to smarten them up. If it's a one off have them in anyway. You should NEVER ignore sickness.

    depends if they have had a holiday declined then taken a sickie or this takes them over an absence target
