We and they knew that Bairstow wasn't as good a keeper as Foakes, but all round I think Bairstow is still the better option.
We’ve been fortunate over the years in that we’ve had pretty good keepers technicallywho have also had a good batting average ie Knott, Stewart and Prior etc. Foakes should become a regular as soon as possible but it’s not an easy task to get him in
Foakes is a decent batter and has contributed to England several times, but he'll never score as quickly as Bairstow. Having said that you have to factor in the runs that JB's keeping has cost us.
Yep, agree with this. Don't think Bairstow should be keeping, because he's hardly done it for ages, has just come back from injury, and was scoring 100s for fun as a specialist batter. Trouble is, to do that, you'd have to move someone out of Pope, Root or Brook to open and/or move a middle order batter to 3. Not sure opening is quite the specialist position under Stokes and McCullum as it previously has, so I'd still prefer that to leaving Foakes out.
Aussies halfway to the total needed. Can only see an England win or draw if there's more rain as possible outcomes. And as I type this they lose Travis Head!
But plodding along. one more wicket and we are getting into their tail end. Khawaja is only going at a run an over. Also the new ball may come into play later this evening.
Not great odds considering in all the years of test matches played by all test playing nations there have only been 2 tied tests ever. This one has a slim chance of a tie but 33-1 is very poor odds
