That was one of the things they did when they first opened! Now people are more aware of the museum service in town it would be nice to revisit it.

Personally, I'd start after the first successful pregnancy. Sow your seed then that's your lot. No more kids for you. Better for the environment, and the sustainability of the planet *but* it wouldn't lead to the economic growth that the rich demand.

I don't believe you are racist at all and you didn't come across that way to me. On the point of population increases however, I think Barnsley is 'roomier' (for want of a better word) than many other places, and although it needs to be taken into account these people desperately need assistance and work needs to be done to help them, throughout the UK. In Bristol, where I live, there are multiple charities working to welcome refugees to the city and house them and help them readjust to a new way of life in unfamiliar surroundings (albeit better surroundings than the ones they are fleeing from). It is a new challenge for these people however; a new city, new way of life, often non-English speaking. Bristol is notoriously bad for driving, my dad (who lives in Poggy) breaks into a cold sweat days before visiting me at the mere thought of turning right onto the M32 from the M4. His reaction is often over the top but the road system is terrible and always busy. But the city makes it happen (the integration of new people to the city), as Barnsley are doing as a town. Personally I find many places a lot worse to get around than Barnsley (barring a one-off when me and my dad drove from Pogmoor to Athersley at rush hour up Smithies Lane, I've always thought it a breath of fresh air compared to what I'm used to). Off the top of my head... Oxford is terrible and designed only for bikes and buses; Birmingham is like a game of Mario Kart, get off at the wrong slip on the ring road and you go round again; Sheffield is bad, as mentioned previously; Bath: shocking, Clapham etc. etc... I could go on.

As a country we are over-populated, yeh, but then we probably always have been. We should be proud that we open our doors to desperate people, and each town/city needs to do their bit. And Barnsley should be proud to be a part of that effort.

ps. I agree that the greenbelt needs to be protected; my partner (from Birmingham) couldn't believe how much green space we have when she visited for the first time; Barnsley really has some beautiful surroundings that sadly I didn't fully appreciate until I moved away 16 years ago.

Seems to be inevitable though that green belt land is being built on all over the country unfortunately. Every town will probably say they same, that's where the phrase NIMBY comes from.

When I mentioned greenbelt protection I should have clarified that some of it should be built on, it's unrealistic to not build on any of it. But at the same time developers shouldn't be allowed to concrete the lot (as has happened in many towns and cities, unfortunately).

I’m only going off personal experience. I know there’s worse in Leeds & Bradford but if there’s 20 plus cities / towns worse than Barnsley then it’s a sorry state of affairs.

Maybe all them billions wasted on Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria & Libya should have gone on infrastructure over here.

It’s a weird state of affairs, Donny council get loads of abuse for all the old buildings they knocked down in the 60’s for traffic management. But go somewhere like Harrogate where they’ve still got more or less Victorian road layout with a single carriageway right into the town centre and I can’t believe anyone thinks that’s ‘better’.

Seriously, the only large town I can think of with better traffic than Barnsley is Grimsby. And the locals still moan about it.

To be fair, the younger you are, the more likely you've succeeded in moving with the times. Many of my parents generation either can't (or won't) grasp the need to be politically correct these days. I shudder at what I hear sometimes.

Just from a quick calculation, Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, and Windsor Castle has around 1,000. The Queen could comfortably house 3-5,000 refugees and still stay in Balmoral or Sandringham while their claims are checked and alternatives accommodation is sorted...

In my experience a lot of people actually get worse with age with an attitude that seems very much like 'ive earned my right to say what I want and you can't stop me'

It's why I hate the phrase "respect your elders".

I'll respect anybody that doesn't prove themselves deserving of disrespect. How many years somebody has been alive has no bearing on that.

I think that’s the excuse they have for being forthright, but I’m not sure there’s evidence to suggest people become more racist as they get older.

Most racists I know are older than me (but certainly not all), and they’ve been racist as long as I’ve known em.

The only exception I can think of… was my dad. He was tolerant for the vast majority of his life, but after he married his 2nd wife (who was a mean spirited old cow), and changed from the mirror to the express he became a bit of a racist nob.

I’m fairly certain, if he’d spent more time with me and my sisters that would never have happened.

Admin. Should we not be considering locking down posts like this. The OP kicked off a controversial debate with a short post then made no attempt to contribute. This is just trolling.
