You generally get what you pay for...

[img=http://www.whatcar.com/NonCar/75881243591.jpg]

Dont think you could get any better than an octavia for your money and they are available in automatic
1.. I said generally 2. Skoda's are no longer cheap! They have had to significantly impove the quality in order to overcome the brand perception. Skoda's (like Seat) are essentially VW's in any case..all VAG common parts. A fabia or octavia would be another good buy.
For fuel economy figures take a look at the official stats http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/ if you have a model in mind just plug it in for example a Landrover Freelander 2 Diesel 2.2 manual returns Fuel Consumption - Imperial [mpg] Imperial Urban (cold) Imperial Extra Urban Imperial Combined 30.6 45.5 37.7 but the Auto is Fuel Consumption - Imperial [mpg] Imperial Urban (cold) Imperial Extra Urban Imperial Combined 25.7 41.5 33.2 ie 16% worse than the manual when cold 9% worse when warm on a long run so at least 10% worse. Some Autos are better than others though

Nissan Qashqai..... ....super economical for a car of that size, especially the 1.5 diesel, although some people find it a bit under-powered. If you're wanting something a bit fancier, I'd go for a second hand Lexus IS.
Most of my cars have been automatics and with the new tiptronic gearbox they are excellent. I have never had any trouble with them. As for fuel economy, little difference although a friend of mine who has had a Passat manual and an auto said the auto was more efficient!
RE: i've got a Nissan Qashqai..... 1.5 diesel an this morning i've got 74 mpg after 89 miles so far. not automatic though. i'm not a car person - I just drive and I love it. very distinctive looking vehicle and much copied now (ford kuga anyone?)
RE: i've got a Nissan Qashqai..... Diesel not available here. I've got the 2.0 petrol (manual) so probably not the most economical version and managed to get from St Petersburg to Tallinn (round trip around 700km) and back on less than one tank which I thought was pretty good going!
