Don't talk facts to Conan. His inability to accept them is legendary.

Mate, I wish you nothing but the best from here on in. Your club is now my favourite Greek club. Please come back on the forum from time to time and let us know how Luke is getting on.

    Thanks, and good luck. :)

If he's the first choice keeper then I'd say it's a good move - potential to play in the Champions League which could be a springboard for a Premier League club to take a punt on him which I'd say his probably his ideal end game.

If he's sat on the bench over there then he's probably going to turn into a journeyman back up keeper.

At least one of them came bottom of the group every year with three or four points. Sometimes both. Quite a few pastings in there too. We must have a differing opinions on what constitutes a whipping boy.

Just recap the facts then for me so far. I think you're confusing a "fact" with an "opinion". mrx saying he would rather live in Greece than Barnsley is not an unequivocal fact.

Why? Because I think that it is better for an English player to play in the English leagues?

I love this. 16 campaigns in the Champions League proper (European Cup) including a final and two semi-finals. And it's not all in the distant past, 7 of those are in the 2000s. As recently as 2008-09 they qualified from the group stage when they topped that group ahead of Inter Milan and knocked Werder Bremen out of the competition. In 2001-02 they made the quarter final after coming through two group stages, topping the first group ahead of Arsenal.

They've also made the quarter finals of the UEFA cup twice, when it was still a proper competition, the last time in 2002-03, and qualified from the group stages 3 times since it went all shitey.

In Champions League games their home attendances are regularly above 50,000.

And let's not forget, the reason they play so many games in Europe is because they're so successful in their domestic league. They regularly challenge for the title. Luke Steele will be joining a club that is actually trying to win trophies. They won the cup last season. They last won the title in 2009-10. Their average attendance for that season was over 29,000. There were 61,000 in the ground for their home game v Olympiacos. Sixty One Thousand!

They're in the qualification rounds for the Champions League this coming season. They'll be trying to win the league and the cup. If they're successful, some of their home attendances will be absolutely massive.

But Luke Steele has taken a step backwards? A transfer from a third tier English side to a top Premier League Greek side that will play in Europe is a step backwards. The justification for this stance appears to be that some of their away games will be poorly attended. The mind boggles.

Last season - average gate 8,757 and highest gate 15,009. Season before - average gate 8,045.

Let's see how they get on in the Chamions League this season.

Still, Jay has spoken so that's pretty much case closed.

The Greek teams have been competitive in the Champions League. Granted they've had one or two pastings but they're no walkover, especially away from home.

At this moment in time signing for Panathanikos is a step forward from Barnsley. Might not be the case in six months, but is most definitely the case now. And in terms of a football career, the possibility of Champions League, playing in a foreign country, and not signing for one of the minnows in that country, are all plus points.

For someone who is so insistent that we're going nowhere, you're soon quick to ridicule another European club?

Some people just don't like the idea of leaving their comfort zone and would rather die in the same town as they're born having gone nowhere and experienced nothing (except some vacations in Brit friendly places).

If nothing, it's a great chance for a young, single (and no doubt fairly well off) lad to go and have a crack at something else.

    I applaud him for it.

Why is it best for an English player to play in the English league? Should their be no international transfers?

I wish him well. I wish more English players, and citizens, had more adventure and bravery to try something different.

The world is a huge place, Barnsley isn't it's epicentre.

Well Luke, looks like you made a huge mistake. If only you'd come on here and asked, people could have made the decision for you.

He'll have looked into the facilities, lifestyle etc and thought he'd like to give it a go for a few years. Why not? Good luck to him. It's funny that after England's worst ever performance at a World Cup Finals and comments on here about what's wrong with the English game, one of those mentioned that the players are too comfortable, happy to just stay in their comfort zone. Ashley Cole said as much on his move to Roma. Steele is going to experience a different type of football, a different league, that's got to be good for his game.

I'm really sorry to see him leave, it's a big loss to the club, but good luck to the lad.
