Wow ... we were at different games last night ...

I thought we were slaughtered at both fullbacks all through the game. Aussie was frequently moving up field and leaving acres for a simple ball into the corner, that's what all the Scnuthorpe fans around me were calling for.

It hurts when you hear other teams supporters laughing amongst themselves at how crap you were at the back and frankly I was ashamed of the defence last night, Austin and Tonge in particular.

I thought McPhail had a good game.....other comments:

MOTM for me was Hayes, followed by McPhail and Austin (despite his f*ck up for their goal, played well).

Scunny- hit and hope lot, should have beaten them and would have if it wasn't for Carbon (penalty- he was absolutely w*nk first half) and Austin's mistakes. I don't think they showed that much otherwise and we could have buried them in that second half spell- their keeper kept them in the game, as well as that headed clearance. And Shuker SHOULD have scored.

As TMFDM said on the way home putting 4 strikers on was not a good ploy by richie- we should have stayed how we were- read some people saying Conlon was good but I don't think he offered a great deal- if he was to come on Richie should have put him on for Nardy (who did very little) if anything and left the midfield in place to supply some balls. Whats the point having 4 Strikers when your only route to them is a hoof from defence??!!

And Scunnies ground is woeful, especially when they sell more tickets than the away end will hold! Still- managed to walk around coloured up which isn't possible at some grounds- so at least that was something.

It was a funny day for results in League 1 yesterday- Forest lost- Bradford lost at home to Southend, Bristol lost and Tranmere could only draw with blackpool at home. Other games were mostly draws. So, if we can get back to winning ways next against Colly we're in with a chance of a good season.

I suppose- to look on Mr Brightside- I'd rather play good football, winning at home but losing some away- than playing cautious and drawing nearly every game like last season. Keep up the good football Reds and we'll do OK. Better than last season in my opinion.

We will be sorry that we didn't go for that '******' Moore, 2 games 2 wins, some astute signings.

    F*** me, SPOT ON

Mind, no mention of a Mr A Ritchie in there, I'd have liked assessment of tictacs too.

As for Christopher's open goal (let's not beat about the bush), it's interesting that from all the other posts that the defence is to blame for us losing...when missing an open goal at 1-1 proved CRIMINAL. And I was right behind it. Shocking effort (tho why was I NOT shocked?)

He is a poor, poor player (tho I was amused to hear one of the bunch of minus IQ ar5eholes in front of me call him "f***ing quality" at one point) Now I know who these ppl are chanting his name. Is everyone like this in the Ponty I wondered...? (apologies, Pontyenders able to read)

    Again, AGREE!

we had ONE very good chance, the rest was just bits and pieces, Hayes having to take 3 players on to get a shot off from edge of box, that kinda thing.

    We created FA.

The reason it's not a CHANCE...

is that a "chance" is where the player probably should score. How could Vaughan possibly have done any better with that header?

When Pedro Mendez shot from 50 yards and Carroll pulled ball out from behind the goalline was that a CHANCE???? Cos that was nearly a goal too. Or was a goal even!

We DO need a left back...

tho that's no reason not to have got rid of Tom, he was s***.

Robbie meantime is too slow. Was it you who said Wroe has that air of "will never quite make it", a la O'Call? Robbie's like that. Like Fallon as well, I wish him the best, but long term, he'll never be a player. Or a full back. Left midfield is his best chance...meaning WE NEED A LEFT BACK

Im never a fan of playing players out of position

but I think Austin did ok, what let us down was having 2 right footed players playing down the left. presumably Ritchie's plan is for Robbie to play left back and Howard to play left midfield, but how many teams get to pick their best side every week? Nardiello and Hayes need the service, and last night neither flank supplied.

Or Liddell, instead of whoever plays on our right!

scores goals, creates goals...nah, I wouldn't have him back and get shut of a "never will be" who's at the end of his contract. Oh no.

moan moan moan. It feels strangely therapeutic, I like it. Good on lads, let's play some more hapless football!!!!!!!!!!

Carbon? A weak, weak, weak, weak man??

    No backbone for a fight?

I'd love to see you say that to his face S.M - and accuse him of only playing 'cos he realised he needed the money. I don't think you'd see the back-end of next week!

Anonymity on a public Bulletin Board is great - but sometimes people really should THINK about what they are typing when expressing opinions about other persons!

    from last nite...

that header of ours near the end (Conlon?) It was a promising position, free towards back post, but the cross was looped over and had no power, so BBB had to create the power, thereby losing the ability to direct it.

Consequently, he put some power in it but it went straight at keeper.

He could have just gone for direction, but it would've been a powder puff header.

So, rather than DEFINE a half chance, I've given an example.

Or when Nardiello was just too late to a rebound...that was a half chance cos there was a chance the keeper wouldn't get there in time. But he did, so the FULL chance never materialised. But maybe if Nads had anticipated better it would have been a "proper" chance.

I thought Austin had a cracking 1st half.

Well, the half hour I saw. What bugged me about that 2nd goal (aside from whether he was fouled) was that a right back has just run from his own half and somehow been clean through. I don't blame Austin for the lack of cover. Or the keeper getting done from an angle at distance.

As it is, Austin is one of those players I would ALWAYS have in my team...but on the right somewhere (I'd take him and Tonge over Tonge and Shuker anyway). At least we'd have someone in midfield who isn't (a close) 2nd to every tackle.

    So a header that

has power and direction and has beaten the keeper but is headed off the line by their defender could not be used as an example as a chance?

    Didn't go.

But I know from experience you watch just about the same team as me (and TMFDM).

So, I'll take it pretty much as read that what you say is probably what I'd have thought if I'd been. Except the bit about Shuker. I'd have voted him Man of the Match. He's great.

I'll tell him next time he's in ear shot

as anyone who has ever met me will vouch for.

    No.

A 'chance' is one where you shout 'My Gran would have backheeled that in'. It's a gimme.

What you're talking about is a good effort on goal. Imagine Ronnie Rosenthal's infamous miss compared with Van Basten's equally renowned volley - that's the difference between a chance and a good effort.
