As long as the account is availlable for any student And I think it is I dont see a problem I would think differently if special treatment was given to any religious group (possible exception of the C of E which is our state religion after all - though no danger of that happening)
RE: As long as the account is availlable for any student Point # 1: Look at the HSBC web-site, as far as I can see the only things required to set-up the account are the usual for bank-accounts (i.e. ID, proof of address etcetera) - nothing is mentioned about proving you're a Muslim. The account only claims to be in accordance with Shariah law and nothing about been exclusive to Muslims - there is a huge, huge difference. Point # 2: Are you really so naive as to think the banks are doing it for nothing? You can guarantee somewhere these people will pay for the services they are using. The banks are hardly known for their charity now are they? Point # 3: Don't blame the government - the banks are private organisations and can and do market any product they see fit. Point # 4: You make the remark about "honest hard working" people like you're almost suggesting that Muslims are neither honest nor hardworking - perhaps you could make that accusation prefixed with "I'm not a racist but" and then you could make your obvious prejudices known to us all. Point # 5: See some of the above posts as to why living in a society that changes to meet the needs of those who contribute to it as opposed to a rigid, authoritarian state is not necessarily a bad thing.
One more thing... ..."they" do have to take citizenships tests or did that little piece of social engineering pass you by? Maybe you could answer me a question? Why should a doctor, a nurse or civil engineer who makes his or her way to this country to provide much needed skills and experience have to take such a test while our "own" little smackrats, thieves and general yobbos who intend to spend as much time as they can draining the resources of the state don't simply 'cos one has brown skin and the other is white?
I liked this "Muslims are the most one of the most racist set of people around. You go into the town centre and listen to them speak. Hey white boy they shout, and when they start to talk in there own language in front of you." 1. I've never encountered that. 2. What language do Muslims speak? 3. Is this written by someone whose first language is Ebglish?
RE: One more thing... I hope your replies were directed at tobes and not me! My point was purely that I didnt see a problem with an account tailored to a specific group as long as you didnt have to prove you belonged to a specific religious group to benefit
Maybe this will help http://money.uk.msn.com/Investing/I..._Your_Money/article.aspx?cp-documentid=144192 All sounds very similar - seems that the main thing is that there are strict controls on what the bank can invest the money in. A sort of ethical policy a bit like the co-op bank.
it's a bank account not a loan so the bit about paying interest is B*ll*cks. i have an interest free overdraft on my account too by the way
I just think people hear "Muslim" and start reacting. As opposed to thinking "is this really a bad thing?"... Multi-culturalism is here to stay whether we like it or not - if all the Muslims in this country were to leave tomorrow we'd have some serious crises on our hands! Most consider themselves "British" and most simply want to co-exist - not impose their beliefs on anyone else. Sure you have the loonies but what religion doesn't? However, the minute someone shouts "Muslim something" a lot of folks think there's a bunch of burka'd up fanatics hiding around the corner with a brainwashing machine as opposed to thinking about the issues and, mainly, the facts... Great start to the season by the way - I've wanted to say that for sometime 'cos I've only been posting for a week or so and I think I've only had one football related debate so far! Maybe I should get of my high horse, eh?!
