Yes, it used to annoy me how many Wednesday shirts there were when my kids were at Springvale school. But Penistone is a nice place to live, so naturally people from Barnsley, Sheffield and Huddersfield will move there. It was the area we wanted to move to when we move back north. But I can’t really moan about where fans live, as I’ve been a Reds fan living in Liverpool, Brighton and London for many years. When we were in the Premiership, I went on BBC breakfast news before the away game at Spurs, as they wanted a Reds fan and Spurs fan on to talk about the ‘relegation battle’. I’d been told to wear my Reds shirt, so I did, the guy from the Spurs supporters club wore a normal shirt. “They always ask you to wear a football shirt, but I never do”. He had been on several times before, worked in the media and knew the presenter (can’t remember the smug get’s name, but he’s still a presenter on the BBC). Anyway, when we got ushered through to the set (I was shocked at how small the set was, you could almost lean forward and touch the camera), the presenter greeted the Spurs fan like an old friend and turned to me with a self-satisfied smirk on his smug face and said, “So, Paul, you’re from the London Branch of the Barnsley Supporters Club…is that a big group?” and he and the Spurs fan had a little chuckle. I got sat in between the two of them, so I looked right out of place as those two chatted over me, but as soon as he had done his intro he turned to me and asked exactly the same question, so I answered, “well it’s much bigger than Spurs’ Barnsley Branch”
