You talk about the Barnsley public...

...not supporting the team, but I'd say the majority of fans who come on here do attend games. This board isn't who should be targeted, it should be the rest of the public who DON'T go.

Is SM really a Reds fan?

He is the most negative poster on here

You csn't just assume we can't survive at this level

It depends how well you're managed, how well you operate in the transfer market, luck, whether your players perform as they can, injuries and a host of other things.

As other people have stated, club's attendances do NOT stipulate exactly how well they do - see Newcastle, Leeds, Sheff Wed, Forest, Bradford etc etc.

    simple question is

how does he explain the 18 straight years or whatever it was of 'championship' football, which lead to the premiership, with attendances often lower than they are now?

as one of the teams (if not the team) that has spent the most seasons at this level then I'd say that's fairly comprehensive proof that we can sustain a championship football club

Would I be right in reading in to the post

by suggesting that one of the deals you were talking about has fallen through for financial reasons?

Barnsley CAN sustain a Championship club...

... although in defence of SM I feel it will become increasingly difficult.

The fact that we have been the longest encumbant at tier 2 level means nothing now . The league we left in 2002 contained teams like Walsall Grimsby Port Vale Crewe Rotherham. Now it almost reads like a Premier league 2. Big names do not guarentee sucess but they are able to attract higher level of investment once they have got their finances in order. The teams coming down from the Prem will have a 'war chest' that could buy the playing staff of most of the Championship clubs added together.

    Dave

PS Stating FACT does not make it so , it's just an opinion.

    Excellent point

The year we got relegated, the league contained 9 clubs which imho we could attain higher gates (revenue) than, and who we realistically should take points from ( I know football doesn't work like that but you get the idea) namely :

Millwall, Wimbledon, Gillingham, Bradford, Walsall, Grimsby, Rotherham, Crewe, Stockport. With all due respect to these clubs.

This season I'd say Blackpool, Scunny, Colchester, then every other club is longer established at a higher level than us in the recent past and has more financial clout.

The fact we stopped at this level from 1981 to 1997 has no relevance whatsoever these days. The league is a far differentproposition to the one we left.

    Bigger crowds than us

And their board and manager seems to have bought better than ours. Unless they are a one season wonder. Still a 'bigger' club than us currently.

    It is a different proposition....

but as the list of clubs you give shows, footballing fortunes change over time and I dare say that a few of the clubs above us at the minute will suffer a fall from grace i.e. Preston.

    RE: Bigger crowds than us

Not really bigger club! They have not had anymore success in recent years?? Ground is no bigger? Yes they're doing a lot better than us right now, and so are getting few thousand more. But not loads!

That just demonstrates what a more difficult task survival at this level is compared to when we were last here. Preston for example may get replaced by Fulham.

5,000 more than us every home game.

115,000 x matchday tickets. Quite a substantial sum.
