Not just about increasing or improving rail transport links, Network Rail have said its one of the most dangerous crossings in the country. As someone who uses the route on a very regular basis I welcome the closing of the crossings and the building of a modern bridge that caters for all mobility issues.

Initial plans were for the permanent bridge to be in place by the time Network Rail closed the crossing, however, a combination of events (some council and some beyond council control) delayed this. Therefore, delivery of the bridge was pushed back to Dec 2019 and a temporary bridge was to be put in place to bridge the gap - pardon the pun!

The original options given to the council from Network Rail were as follows:
1. Install a new expensive barrier system and keep the crossing open - controls were being switched to York(?) so the current barriers weren’t viable. This option didn’t sit well with Network Rail’s level crossing closure programme and they preferred to avoid this option at all costs - as did the council given they’ve wanted it closed for years and Kendray Street will be (almost) pedestrianised.
2. Install a standard 1 metre wide green and yellow railway bridge fully funded by Network Rail. Think of those you see on any local stations - Normanton is a good example of what we would’ve got.
3. The council to suggest an alternative - hence we ended up with the combined funding option.

Cineworld and Superbowl UK both have long stop conditions written into their pre-lets with the council. Essentially meaning their units have to be handed over at a certain date or they can walk away from the development. This date has already been pushed back once due to delays to phase two of the glassworks and it would be bad practice and risky of the council to attempt to delay again. These delays meant that it wouldn’t be possible to construct the bridge at the same time as the Cineworld unit, and given a temporary bridge was already arranged to cover the initial delay (March 19 - Dec 19), it made sense to delay the bridge and crack on with the leisure units.

It’s interesting to see in the new designs that they’ve now scrapped the funiculars and swapped to something more standard. Hardly surprising given the proposed costs and maintenance packages required to deliver and run the funiculars - also something that contributed to the initial delays.

 

There are places closer to park the car . But it really isnt the big deal you're making it out to be.

Yes it confirmed that Barnsley Council Planning Department was fully engaged with the proposed bridge development.
And as a result of that we have ended up with a bridge made from a Maccano Set.

 

I suspect there’d be much more uproar if the council allowed Network Rail to go ahead and build a permanent bridge that wasn’t sufficient.

Obviously the council have been fully engaged and involved with the process. It’s the council that had to enforce the Traffic Regulation Order to make the crossing no longer a public right of way. Network Rail provided the temporary bridge and planning permission wasn’t required, or requested. The crossing would’ve been closed in March no matter what.

 

Which ever way you look at this - either
Network Rail did what they want without serious liaison with Barnsley Council.
Or
Barnsley Council did what they want.
The facts remain that Barnsley Council has left supporters of Barnsley Football Club with restricted access to Oakwell.

Barnsley Council have NOT considered Barnsley Football Club supporters.
We as supporters have been severely let down by this Labour controlled council that we pay taxes to for their wages.
And I mention ‘Labour controlled’ because if this was a swing constituency then in no way would the present Barnsley Council have sat on their ar@e and let Network Rail impose whatever they wanted and erected an extremely ugly, not fit for purpose, structure slap bang in the middle of the town centre.
There needs to be a few job loses because of this decision.
But as usual - the jobs for the boys attitude will be maintained.

 

What do you actually suggest then as a solution ?

 

Pure comedy. Keep 'em coming Nudge. It has been a bit of a dull evening, apart from the Stoke defeat.

 

Give this council a kick in the ballots.
Then just sit back and watch things change - no matter if Labour win or lose.

I’ll just say this ........ I work with planners so I have a certain amount of knowledge about planning.
There’s some ballax being posted on here.
But as the owd saying goes - tha can’t knock a nail in a knot.
