barnsley will change when the aspirations of its people change

To want something better than they have and to question those 'benign' caring souls who have overseen it change from a vibrant lively town into a soulless drinking den, and are hellbent on scarring its green belt for warehousing and industrial units that nobody wants.

Whilst ever parents send their offspring to schools with an astonishing lack of respect for the educational process then nothing will alter - it will always be "their" responsibility to provide everything.

The economic vandalism rained down from central govt notwithstanding.

Friday evening before the game in town was shocking.

The dregs of society wandering about aimlessly after a day on the booze bought for by the likes of us.

Shock Horror, Young Nudge in let's knock Barnsley post.

I can't speak about Donny, not been for years but the last time I went it was no better than Barnsley if I recall rightly though Donny town centre covers a much wider area than Barnsley town centre. Now, Peterboro I can talk about, my second home up to 10 years ago, visited regularly since the mid 1950's spent all my school hols in a little village 10 miles north of Peterboro. Peterboro used to be a lovely city set in the middle of very wealthy farming area, I repeat, set in the middle of a very WEALTHY farming area and that is why it is unfair to compare any similar town to Barnsley with Peterboro, but, I can tell you, outside tables apart, Peterboro on the surface, to a casual short term visitor may look good but over the last 20 years it has changed socially for the worst. There has always been a small contingent of migrant workers based there for the seasonal farming work but I can tell you that there has been a massive influx of immigrants much much worse than here, and it is having a very bad effect on the city. There are regular inter ethnic gang fights that I am told are quite frightening when they erupt. Not 5 mins drive away from the cathedral car park there is a council/social housing estate that 30 years ago was worse than any in Barnsley, I know for this for a fact because a very close friend lived there all her life up to getting married and moving to Jersey and she used to tell us all kinds of unsavoury stories, she was lucky because it is now worse, it's full of druggies, gangsters, chavs and every race under the sun. I still know and keep in contact with people I have met over the years and most of them will not go anywhere near the city now because of the ammount of trouble that keeps happening, they prefer to go to Stamford to shop, as do I. So there we are nudge, a well informed counter view to yours. This by the way is not intended to excuse the state of the town centre which in my view isn't as good as it should be but not as bad as some people try to make out. There are very significant underlying funding issues that affect the town, both from the past and now. I remember a council member saying in the Thatcher era that if Barnsley got the funding per person that some of the southern tory area's got we would be able to fund all the social commitment and have money over to give as rate refunds. That is still happening.

I don't usually get involved in this kind of thing, but I think it's a lotto do with the people and the mindset of many.

Who's in town through the week?

Up and coming professionals who tend to enjoy a coffee or a bit of culture?

Yeh. I went for a 'look round' yesterday morning. Was at Meadowhell 40 minutes later. Nothing there anymore apart from pound shops and places like Cash Converters.

Re: its not just Barnsley Nudger

    A few comments

Yes I've been to Newport and I thought it was ok at the time....although that was a few years ago
Peterborough.......yes I know about the immigration problems in Peterborough and Doncaster has suffered a similar fate......this is a consequence of having the East Coast Mainline stopping at both places.
Migrants have been sent out of London on the train and the first stop is Peterborough and the second stop is Doncaster
But even though they have far far bigger immigration problems than Barnsley they still both have a much pleasurable town centre

The major difference in Barnsley is that people actually work and live in the town centre.........there are very few jobs especially professional jobs in Barnsley Town Centre
And no one lives in Barnsley Town Centre
Barnsley has got a couple of things going for it....its 1 mile from the M1 Motorway and its on a direct route between Sheffield and especially Leeds where professional people work
In my opinion the strategy ought to be to get commuters living in the centre of Barnsley............but to do this there needs to be an environment for them to live in. And that means more individual shops, cafes and bars.

There are companies that actually understand how to develop town centres and how to make them work - on their past record the planning department at Barnsley Council should relinquish all rights to make decisions on the town centre and pass the decision making over to people that can bring in new ideas

Re: Barnsley Council have a lot to answer for...........top 10 cheapest places to ren

It's easier to look at other places and think the grass is greener. If we're talking town centre's, Barnsley's is far from the worst in the area. Rotherham is far worse although they do have Park Gate and Meadowhall on the doorstep which almost makes the town centre redundant.

Being a biggish city, Sheffield is always going to be given money to tart itself up - much of the centre is barely recognisable from 10-15 years ago.

Meadowhall certainly hasn't helped Barnsley though, you can get there in less than 20 minutes and be parked up for free from most parts of Barnsley. It's not just that though, there's a lot more choice and I dare say you can get stuff cheaper from there than in town. If you want some quality clothing there is only the odd place in town where you are going to get it but Boardwalk/Frank Birds isn't somewhere I could afford to regularly buy stuff (nice clothes but I ain't paying £80 for a polo shirt) and that place at the top of the arcade charges obscene prices for brands I've never heard of. Go to Meadowhall and all the brands have their own shops where the price of stuff is comparable to buying online.

I spend as much as I can on what I need.

I'm not saying it's perfect. I know some stuff I buy I can't get from Town but if I can get it I will. And I gladly pay extra for it.

Trainers in Originals for example, CD from Debut records, dinner at Aroma cafe, a beer at Number 7, food from the market rather than Morrisons etc etc. Every bit helps.

He has but I personally think that the Gateway Plaza is a very unwelcoming, bland building in a poor location (though I accept that the first such development will always be in a poor location until others join it) and doesn't really offer a great deal because it is too small.

Originals has gone down hill over the last few years.

By down hill I mean *****.

Frank birds has some decent kit in but it's more expensive than its compatriots in meadowhall.

Best jeans co is still going.

    The jeans store for men.

I think shopping as we have known it has died a death
I do most of my shopping on the internet.............principally because of the size and shape of me........so I end up buying my cloths from 'the little shop of horrors' and the like
If I go into a cloths shop and the shop assistant says they have something off the peg that will fit me then I usually reply 'if you have something off the peg that fits me then you need to sack your tailor!!!'

But cloth shops like Burtons are not what towns like Barnsley are about now............its more about individual oddity type shops and delis, bars and cafes.......not Marks & Sparks and the like

Re: its not just Barnsley Nudger

A few comments back, Peterboro has always been a much more pleasurable city centre than Barnsley, it's bigger and more wealthy, it has got a better funding base and always has, it's not cheap to live there. It's all about perception, everything people on here say about Barnsley ( immigrants, chavs, druggies ) I hear the same from people down there, just because the infrastructure is better and historically always has been doesn't make it any better for the people that live there. As for Doncaster, why do you think it's more pleasurable? tables aside, does it not have pound shops, does it not have charity shops, are there no empty shops.
As for the development of the town centre and employing companies to help in this development, yep I agree, BUT, where's the money coming from, the market development has had a funding issue for years so where will the money come from for housing in the town and further redevelopment of the retail and leisure outlets. Money can only come from private sources or from the likes of you and me in the form of council tax to cover commercial loans, just imagine this board if tommorow, the council announced that they were borrowing billions of pounds, to totally redevelop the town into a sophisticated cafe culture centre so that young nudge can enjoy a coffee in the open air on the 20 or so days of sunshine a year we get. OH and by the way we are going to have to treble your council tax to fund that loan.
