I like that nudge, my mind is now in overdrive trying picture what you look like.
Back to the discussion, I left school in 1964 and started working at Burton's in Barnsley, in those days it was all about bespoke, yes I was the little puff that used to measure your inside leg ( what side do you dress sir, my my, sir's wife is a lucky lady etc. ) and the shop was busy every day, but on Saturdays it was wild from 10am to 4.30pm the shop would be rammed and most of the customers were either miners, or people employed in mining related industries and of course the steel workers that worked at Sammies ( who I joined in 1971 until I retired in 2005 ) but that all ended when most of those people lost their well paid jobs. We are now full circle back to funding, if there's no money in the area then shops will close and it gets harder to attract new retailers to move in, it then becomes a fast moving downward spiral. The ever dwindling group of people with money and jobs find they have to go elswhere to get that bit of something special and they get replaced by the scum that now frequent the town.

What always troubles me about threads like this are the opinions of those who feel its ok for our town centre to be ****, because Rotherham, Donny and and Newport are arguably sh1tter.

It seems we're in a tallest dwarf competition but happy to be stood in a hole.

Also when someone from Barnsley feels saddened by the town's plight to me it's a sign that they care about the place. The town centre is horrid these days from the bus station round to the mall. It's not a nice place to spend time.

Ok you might not like it but it's far from horrid. I only really go in to barnsley when it's going to be busier than the normal like match days ect but it's not a bad place.

You should take a walk round on a week day or take a walk up past cash convertors.

I suppose that depends on your definition of horrid. Considering both me and my mrs are from Barnsley our opinions should count for something. We nip in town for some essentials each Saturday but have given up on spending much leisure time there.

Fine but i think some people are always looking at negatives be that be in the place that they live or in the sports they like.

I love Barnsley, I love being in Barnsley and spending my time/money in Barnsley. You should all visit Motherwell Main Street and then you'll bloody love Barnsley even more!

I wouldn't say it's a shithole or run down, it's just a typical Northern town these days. Every town has its smackheads/chavs/etc.

In business, the first thing you do is analyse your weaknesses and act upon them to improve and drive positive change.

That's no reason to not strive to be better than those other 'typical' northern towns.

    I agree entirely.

But there's a chicken and egg situation. The council can only do so much - at the end of the day, it's private business. If a certain business thrives, more will come. People need to start spending their time & money in town for more to follow.

It'll be the lads that don't shop in Town that complain in 5 years when there's even less.

Mandela gardens frequented by teenage skater kids and piss artists.

The arcade, one empty shop. Soon to be another. The rents cripple businesses there as foot flow is bordering on no existent.

The buildings up market hill, a pub a bookies and a pawn shop?

The civic and town hall are the only buildings I recall the council spending money on on recent years.malthough 18 months to fix a clock...

Lacorum building may concede on that one although the pub inside has a bad rep.

It sounds to me people are favouring a gentrification of the town centre. For cafes, bars, galleries etc to open and succeed - it will require a resident populace. Is there space for a residential community in affordable housing? There is no doubt meadowhall has done for Barnsley as a shopping centre, my Mam was remembering recently when people came to Barnsley from miles around for the markets and other businesses benefitted as a result.

I like the skaters kids, build them a skate park!!

The age of internet shopping is killing all the high street retailers, which in turn had killed off all the independent shops. Even here in York, which benefits from thousands of tourists, there are lots of empty shops. Is Dyson says, if you want something to survive then try and spend your money there. I always buy my books form actual shops rather than online where they're cheaper, because if bookshops disappeared from the high street then I would be devestated.

The biggest challenge for places like Barnsley is avoiding town centre supermarkets because they are the death knell for any shops because nothing can compete.

Re: Barnsley Council have a lot to answer for...........top 10 cheapest places to ren

So you'd rather the gardens were empty? I like going past and seeing you lads & lasses just sat about. That's what they're there for.
The arcade has now got (in no particular order)
    - Record shop
    - Victorian tea rooms
    - Aroma Cafe that does food & drinks of a night
    - Originals that have got all the latest Adidas trainers in and can order gear in if you ask 'em.
    - Frank Bird's
    - Boardwalk
    - Barnsley Hospice charity shop (which has decent stuff in)

And there's other smaller independent shops opening up too.

I understand why people are put off by Town centre but like I keep saying - try spending an extra quid in there every week and then if the shops do shut you've done your bit.

It'll be reyt once new tarn centre is complete, some folk coming back from Meadowhall and using the multiscreen cinema, big name shops & restaurants. Hopefully it will drive out the scruffy b*stards, emo's & Skater boys.

BMBC should be working their knackers off to find the funding for it.

I don't particularly want it, mate. A multiscreen cinema means that the local, independent one shuts. Big name shops & restaurants means again the local ones shut too.
