I'll add the Central Library to that list - probably the only 70's building that isn't a "monsterous carbuncle".

Unfortunately I think there is a mindset in the "youf of today" that only multiple outlets are any good and that independents are to55.

The local ones are doing nowt for the area, they're run down and full of the dross, l'd rather be sat in Costa/Starbucks with summat pretty to look at than in Maggies greasy spoon with some fat bird phlegming up at the side of me. Not saying they're all like that but pretty much 75% of em. Granted the one down the arcade in town and Olive are decent. That cinema in town is absolutley shocking, l sit outside it 3 times a week picking the missus up from the train station, what an eyesore and embarassment. The young un's been in it and said it's stinks of piss and horrible inside, she's now back at the Meadowhall multiscreen with her mates again. Too many poundshops and terrible local shops, the kids won't buy from em, hence they're off to Meadowhall for the big retailers. The town needs to get these back in if it wants to recover, were never going to have a decent town centre if it's all just local shops and cheap shops. It needs a mix but the majority need to be the big names.

In my opinion of course, reyt snob.

Unfortunately Barnsley has Meadowhall and Leeds on its doorstep, both far more attractive shopping locations to the majority of the shopping public, blinded by big lights and aggressive marketing. Plus the drive towards the bottom in terms of price, and the public gets what it deserves in a large number of cases. However, niche shops, quality locally sourced goods, eco friendly goods etc etc are the current trends, and a slight shift towards VALUE over price. But is our town centre poised to take advantage ? Is it **** imho because of the short sighted policies adopted in recent years, and the obliteration of a large swaithe of the town to get the relief road in for the benefit of another supermarket (dragging trade from the centre) where Broadway was ideal to take through traffic away from Barnsley.

Have BMBC ever consulted with Rita Britton and Frank Birds on how a business has survived and grown in the midst of recent economic and social developments ? Has it ever asked the independent businesses what they need to help them prosper ? I'd suggest they've rushed headlong into making the town centre bar central and grabbing European Union money (aka bribe for removing heavy industry) to develop white elephant 'business parks' etc.

Unfortunately the cinema is not going to invest in a spruce up until the town centre development is decided one way or another. Though why they don't pull the unused 5hit down in the meantime and provide extra parking I don't know.

How long ago was this planned? I'd never heard of this one before. I suppose it would have ruined the town centre, but lets be honest, the high street is on its way out! Relocating
Dodworth train station which is 5 minutes away this could have been a winner!!
