There speaks the man who got rid of De Zeeuw to improve the team by signing

Chettle and Tuttle. He also resigned the 'god' that was Eric Tinkler when he was injured. He also didn't give Hristov a fair crack in that season. We got to Wembley mainly through Hignett having a storming season. Bassett is a cockernee gobshite who is a media darling can't fecking stand it when they wheel him out for interviews etc.</p>

    Dear Dave

You had the most expensive side ever assembly in the history of Barnsley, and you failed.

    Regards,

    Wakeyred.

    Rubbish.

Always felt that we sold out a bit when we took that long ball dee-dah on. Not sure he ever really believed in us as a club - felt like he was just taking a pay cheque (yes I enjoyed Wembley as much as anyone else - it's just an opinion, don't lose the plot!).

At the end of the day it up to people to have a pop at us for having expectations and ambitions - but they're out of order doing it. People like to see nice little Barnsley battling away at the bottom and just about keeping our heads above water - they don't like us quite so much when we do well. Nothing wrong with us being ambitious - the fact of the matter is that Bassett is out of touch with us as a club and he is talking out of his hole. Last season what was really wrong with us was the number of points we conceded after we had taken the lead, and particularly as we were trying to hang on in the last ten minutes. That lack of bite in the last ten minutes, that lack of fitness, that lack of grip and focus cost us easily enough points to keep us safe in the midtable. Bassett is a hypocrit - he wouldn't have stood for that last year - the basics of defending and goalkeeping letting us down week in and week out in that last ten minutes. We have perfectly reasonable expectations when we talk about staying out of the relegation dog fight - nobody is talking about us going back to the Prem. The criticisms of Davey came from those of us who felt that we were actually punching below our weight - and that the repeated crazy selections we were holding us back.

As for getting relegated 'so miserably' - look again Bertie - there have been plenty that have got relegated with less points. We came so close to survival and we notched up some excellent performances that year.

And as for us thinking we are a 'sleeping giant' - I've never heard so much rubbish.

Bassett is a mercenary who is getting paid for talking rubbish. It shows how little he knows about us.

Hated Basset when he managed us and hate him now

It's the one and half seasons i didn't have a season ticket and was so glad when he got sacked. For me he was the reason why we had the dark years in league 1. We got to the playoff final despite him not because of him.

    Rant over

    The truth is...

...that playoff final was the last spin of the wheel for us. We put everything on that season, threw the kitchen sink into it, left us gutted and penniless when we had to flog the best players and sign the crap replacements. Then Bassett was off soon after. It was an all or nothing season and we lost out.

I thought we were very entertaining that year

Onethe best seasons I've seen - scored loads of goals and played good football. Losing Higgy in the close season was a massive body blow and we never recovered from that

is it me or is he talking about

people within the club, I remember reading his autobiography and him saying that we thought we were a prem club but on the other hand we were not willing to put the money where our mouth is! I think it is a fair point he has made there, simply things like keeping Redfern after relegation; what did we do to keep him at the club? Wilson leave the most succesful manger in the history of the club and we replace him with a rookie manager in John Hendrie! How much money was invested after the Ward and Hignett sales?

After the prem season I think it was fair to say the club was run extremely badly. But we are nothing like Newcastle fans

I was in the same room as him on the night we got through to Wembley - when we lost 2-1 at home to Vermingham Shítty.

I saw the excitement in his eyes - unless he was a bloody good actor, he was genuinely proud of what his team had just done. I can't knock Bassett.

Scoring squillions of goals and being 90 minutes from a return to the Premiership? I'd settle for that again any time soon, thanks.

Yes, the Press wheel him out when they want a quote - and he's got to say something. What he's said is essentially true anyway. Don't hang the guy for that.

And who started that ball rolling?

Eric Tinkler re-signed, Chettle, Tuttle, Ward, Neil, Jones, Regan...any more?
