RE: It's not what he has said - it is the pretentious way he says it

still cant see whats actually wrong , just cos he's from town, he doesnt have to stick the stereotypical flat cap and whippits line...

it always amazes me how insular and regressive barnsley folk are ,dont get me wrong i love our sense of pride in our town and more importantly in our people , friends , family but whenever anyone dares to be different its always frowned upon a little.

RE: It's not what he has said - it is the pretentious way he says it

    I think you've misunderstood me.

I don't think he should've written something along the lines of 'Nar then, what tha wants is...' - I don't think anyone else on that website has (although I haven't read all of the posts to be fair). Ifit was a debate on what theyshould put in the centre of Croydonor Luton, I'd still think that the person who entered that post waspretentious. That has nothing at all to do with him being from Barnsley. Don't get me wrong - I'mfrom Barnsley, I've moved around the country, I've beento university, andI love to see people comingfrom Barnsley doing well and over turning the old flat cap and whippets image. I hate the way that a lot of the national press lazily perpetuate this 'Yorkshire folk' reputation (remember that article that got posted up about the London journo who suggested that we didn't have any telephonesor internet connections in the West Stand? And that this somehow suggested that Barnsley people have a natural suspicion of progress?).It's just the language that bloke is using makes my skin crawl - much of what he has said is more about him than Barnsley. It's almost like he's saying 'Look at me, I'm at Manchester University, and I'm really clever and sophisticated' - it comes across (to me) as painfully self conscious. Other people have said exactly the same thing (i.e. a piece of modern art would reflect a better future for Barnsley, rather than a statue that reflects the past) - but most people have used simple straight forward language which is always far more appealing, and in my opinion, eloquent. You can be educated and progressive without trying to be Frazier Crane.

The second thingit suggests to me is that Manchester is somehow superior to Barnsley - a step up. B*ll*cks. Manchester has a far worse record in things that really matter, such as violent crime, and larger areas of social poverty. But no, fair enough, Manchester has got better modern art. How does a piece of modern art in Manchester genuinelymean that the people of Manchester have less insular attitudes or opinions? Again - rubbish. I'll bet there are plentyof people in (and from) Barnsley who have a progressive attitude, and like modern art - and what goes on that plinth will dobollock all to reflect that. The final issue, of course, is that plenty of people in Barnsley (and from Barnsley) do have amodern progressive attitudeand don't like modern art, and there is nothing wrong with that either.

There should be a statue of Tommy Taylor outside the ground.

And they should name a stand after him.

RE: It's not what he has said - it is the pretentious way he says it

but does that make him an asshole ?

what i was refering to was the fact that becuse he expresses his view in a manner that is diferent from the expected normality of someone from barnsley he becomes " pretentious" and as you told him...

Stick your connotations and contemporary persona up your arse.

just smacks of a "your not meant to say those words your from town" mentality.. if ive gotten the wrong end of your original intention then fair play , such is life and differing ideas and thoughts make for debate i suppose !

    take it easy....
