I think Barnsley is excellent now for an evening/night out if you like swanky cocktail bars and "late" bars like all the ones in Wellington and Peel Street.

What I do think its missing badly in the centre (not on the edge - some great places like Heaven and Ale just out of the centre) is many proper real ale pubs, or just places that serve it. There's so many places you can go for a drink in town yet you can probably count on one hand the number of ale and craft beer places. We're supposed to love proper ale up here yet you've got the likes of Chambers, Courthouse, Chennells, Annie Murrays and a million other places that just serve generic piss water. As for craft beer, that Maison du biere place was fantastic and I was gutted to hear it had closed as it offered something you can't get anywhere else in town.

Might start a campaign for real al....oh

Heaven n Ale is great and less than 10 mins from where I live. Another nice little bar has opened at the bottom of Racecommon Road called Dot’s Tipple. Three hand pulled ales on there.
Tipsy Cow is great too for real ales.

I'm 'over 55'. Grew up in the 80's town nightlife. Love going back now. Great night.

Load of ******, sad my arse, it’s people out enjoying themselves that’s all. Tarn’s quite different to what it used to be when I was younger, for the better anall (apart from prices)Perhaps it’s you not enjoying yourself and having to watch others doing so what’s your problem?

Should have added Wembley at the end there Mick. :)
Wouldn't mind catching up if you've a bit of spare time whilst you're here.

We were in the No.:7 a few weeks ago on a Friday neet and they were sweeping up around us at half past nine, chucked out at 10 and the door bolted behind us. And he wouldn't honour my discount card.

For a good while now I've thought that Barnsley is a great night out, especially the late afternoon to midnight period, where the selection of bars is really good. From The Salthouse/Falco/Market, up the Arcade/Garrison and around to Annie Murrays (O'Dwyers) and then further up to the White Bear, you're spoilt for choice really and that's only one area of town. I put this to the test by asking a couple of mates who swear by Sheffield and bigger places and they loved it. We should be pretty proud of our nightlife choices I think and actually, thinking about the towns and cities we drink around on away days, we must be a dream for away supporters.

I suppose an argument could be made that Barnsley lacks a proper nightclub, as in the old school sense, but then whether these are even the in thing now I'm not sure. Younger work colleagues seem perfectly happy with various bars rather than having to 'end up' somewhere in particular. Che/Coco and the old Funny Gals probably serve this need anyway.

    Out with the missus:
Start in Gateway Plaza and then onto the old bank, Garrison, down the arcade to Salt House, Botanist, Black and White, Market Kitchen.

If you're with your mates and you fancy a finger blast round the back of argos at 1am:

Drink in owt on Market Hill.

    If you want clap:

    Wellington Street.
