Agree, since I had to move away from Barnsley, tend to notice the drive down Dodworth Rd a bit more than i used to - there is/was an ideal opportunity to do something imaginitive to present Barnsley to visitirs in a positive light - there are touches as you turn up Shambles St, should be a drive by powers that be to make that artery a hive of independent retailers and the associated cafes, restaraunts etc.

This all relies on the locals using such outlets rather than tootling off to Meadowhall and Leeds etc. Imho needs a leap of faith by the council to help retailers make use of the existing buildings etc, rather than 'landmark' schemes which soon lose their lustre.

Not really, I'm just saying that I wish the town had a better perception amongst many of it's visitors and that a flagship Lidl store at town end is not going to help that.

If wanting my home town to build it's reputation beyond that of a hub for value retail outlets makes me snobby then so be it. I call it aspirational.

And those flagship brands were queuing up to take over that concreted monstrosity.

It's not the brand I'd have particularly chosen but it looks pleasing enough on the eye.

And your focusing on the wrong things.

No, and that was my original point if you read it... that instead of plonking a value retailer there the space should have been used for a more community-centric purpose.

I'm not focussing on the wrong things, I'm focussing on the things that are wrong in my view.

No you were being snobby about the perception a value retailer being at the focus point in the way into town yet you'd rather have it as a community centric area without giving an example of what.

Another community park? A continental style plaza with cafe bars and bistros and fancy coffee shops?

I did give an example... you just quoted it back to me. And yeah, what on earth was i thinking! A park or plaza when we can have a Lidl instead. What a lovely person I am.

You think a value retailer creates a positive image of the town? If so, fair enough but we have very different views. As I stated earlier, having aspirations is not snobbery. **** me, we'd still be living in caves with attitudes like yours.

"Look at Barney Rubble will you... moving in to one of those snobby mud huts and attempting to farm the land... who does he think he is."

Yeah let's have another plaza and see how long it is before is addled with stoned skaters and pissheads. Be new one soon for them to play in next to the town hall

Let's do what chesterfield did and open loads of coffee shops with chairs outside, proper continental like, up only for the majority outside the 'named brands' close as they couldn't financially with them.

Rather than putting some fancy seats out for people to have a milky coffee with their morning roll up lets focus on something barnsleys unique for and build on that.

Beats copying every other town and citys redevelopment over the last few years doesn't it?

The way to regenerate is not to put a supermarket in the middle of town which cripples local business that can't compete

    Or in barnsleys case another.

I think within a mile of the bus station there's morrisons, two icelands, a farmfoods,Asda, marks and lidl. Soon to be another outside gala bingo.

Well back to the actual programme....I thought that was one of the best news reports filmed in Barnsley I've seen, it wasn't condescending or dismissive of the town. As to the comment about the supermarket you choose shows what you are like....maybe it states how much money you have or are prepared to waste. What about the shot of Audis and BMWs in the car park then? Lidl has some decent products, as does Aldi, they keep costs down by not stocking more than 1 brand of a product. We shop in a variety of places, Morrisons, Tescos, Aldi, M&S. Just got a £50 off voucher for Ocado from buying a new washing machine so it's there this weekend.

    Rob Royd Farm Shop...

...ought to open a branch in the town centre - on Market Hill - that is open till 6:00 pm on a Saturday. I could then get something nice for tea on my way home from a match.
