Barnsley pre EU (1970ish)

    I've got to disagree ...although I accept beauty is in the eye...etc.
    I know it was never York or Chester, but there were some great old buildings around...some of Shambles Street was Tudor ( allegedly)....the interesting old streets around the Alhambra and behind the Civic Hall....and the quirky little old shops down Sheffield Road were great.
    The problem was every building was covered in a thick black layer masking some beautiful stonework.

    Actually there's still a few "nice" buildings about, mainly on Market Hill / Church Street / Regent Street; unfortunately no one wants them as many are empty, up for sale / rent, and slowly dilapidating (the old Barclays Bank building is covered in some sort of crud).
