Allan Clarke being appointed player/manager galvanised not only the club but the town, too. He was like a positive tornado sweeping in. After years of being down in the bottom division, Clarke laid the foundations for all the magnificent times that were to follow.

Maybe we should have a thread for separate seasons over the years. People could contribute their memories from each one and maybe give those not old enough tp have been there an idea of what it felt like.
I lived and breathed Barnsley at the time. That season was intoxicating.

I loved going to those run down Fourth Division grounds that we'd visited for years. Only this time there was usually a huge Barnsley following. It was quite common for our fans to take up three sides of a ground and leave the home supporters in one section.

Yep. Halifax, Wigan, Northampton where it was a three sided ground as they still played at the County Cricket Ground.

Rochdale & Scunthorpe, too, off the top of my head.

Those two I missed as I was still in college. I probably watched either Norwich or Ipswich instead, watching top division football and wishing I was 150 miles north watching the Reds.
I packed in Uni in February and only missed Hereford and Bournemouth away games over the rest of the season.
I blame Barnsley for me leaving college. I could have been rich and famous by now if it weren't for Allan Clarke! :)

What a night that was! Remember sitting in the Upper West Stand with my grandad - it was only my second game at Oakwell!

That’s a fine idea if you’ve got a memory like Biglil but I remember going to Bury Stockport Halifax Bradford and the like but other than a win at Rochdale in the promotion season they all melt into one!

Great memories of that time. Just shows what kind of impact a 30 something ex-International can have on a small club. Magnificent time to be a Reds fan and we all know what followed in the next few years.

Clarke coming to us then would be akin to someone like James Milner coming to us now as player- manager.

Was sat in the West Stand with my Mum (who died recently), my Dad who I've spent all weekend with & is in a serious condition & my younger brother, who has been with me all weekend. I was 15 & my brother 8 at the time. The first glory times for me following the Reds.

The celebrations after the game couldn’t have been better for us as me, my dad, grandad and uncle all stood on the terrace next to the tunnel - just under the directors box where the players stood to acknowledge the fans.
Remember Macca stood in nothing but his underpants.

You can do a thread on what you had for breakfast yesterday then. :)
Mind you I'd struggle to remember mine if it weren't that I have toast every day.

I've still got all the old stuff from the Chron somewhere I think. I'll try and dig it out tomorrow.

Watched that from the south terrace that night as a 9 year old who lived and loved football.

What a journey we have been on since.
Rough and smooth has always been and will always be the lot of a Barnsley fan. We will rise again.

Loved that simple kit we had back then too.
