I remember Burnley playing a match they had to win to stay in the League

They finished 5th from bottom of the 4th division that season

in many ways they are similar to us - not just because some people confuse Burn and Barn when looking at us.

I'd be surprised if their player budget and salaries are a lot different to ours - and they are in the playoffs.

It is difficult to get there but definitely possible - its possible for us with good management and good luck - Had we signed Scotland (instead of Swansea signing him) for example and played to his strengths we would have been at worst comfortable mid table.

Oh and as others have said 1996 we did OK

    No

For his 'Champions League in 2 years then' response above, as obviously anyone disagreeing with his post thinks that.

And the quoting salaries of Wolves players which I am sure are way off the mark.

Making things up to 'back up' your point is childish.

RE: I was just interested to know....

People will just argue that football has "moved on" since then

There's more money in the second divison now and more ex-premiership teams

Ex-premiership teams like Preston, Burnley, Cardiff and Swansea

Any excuse for mediocrity will do

I assume he's under the age of 18 now

As he seems to think there is a drink called Carsberg, it's all over his profile. "Carsberg don't do football results..."

Why should a team like Barnsley struggle?

    The answer is we shouldn't.

Being a female I obviously don't know what I'm talking about so please don't feel the need to read the rest of the post!

Barnsley FC aren't unique in the fact that they can't get the players they want to sign for them. Even the "big money" teams in England, Italy and Spain don't always get the players they want. Football players are no different to every person who has to work for a living, we all want the best paid job, car, house and lifestyle we can so we can provide for our families. (Yes I know playing and training for a couple of days per week instead of 50+ hours of manual labour can be misconstrued as not really working for a living but we'll let that one go)

This season and the previous two if we're honest haven't been successful when it comes to the "bread and butter" day to day work of competeing in the Championship. The cup run last year was a bonus. Managing to stay in the Championship the first year could be argued as a success as such when it didn't look possible when Simon Davey took over from Andy Ritchie and that was nerve-wracking enough doing so on the penultimate match of the season. However repeating this last season was not, in my opinion a success or an improvement. As I said the cup run was a success but should have been in addition to a good year in the league not instead of.

This season, what should have seen at least a mid-table finish at least, provided us with one where we were sat on the edge of our seats waiting for the last whistle to be blown at more than just Plymouths ground in order to see us safe. (Bit of poetic licence as we were in A & E but let me off with that). We should never have been in that situation whereby we have to rely on other teams to do us favours. We have/had a squad who should have been more than capable of establishing themselves in a healthy position in the division with a view to maybe challenging for the playoffs next. However this squad of players were constantly played out of their normal positions and consisted of too many loan sigings, some of whom were only here for a month and couldn't play in some of the matches as they were against their own teams.

As regards the "we need money to compete" arguement, we are one of the fortunate teams that have a benefactor who is also a football fan and uses his money to keep the club he supports solvent. Mr Cryne has always been a quiet person who has preferred to be a "sleeping partener" bankrolling the Club but not having to be the "Face of it", he has never wanted the hands on role of Chairman. Other than having the money, he's just like the rest of us, he wants to spend his week at work (or his retirement at home) and then on Saturdays(whenever) go to watch the team he supports play football. This season will have upset him as much as the rest of us but, thankfully, we don't have to make the decisions he has to. Whether he backs or sacks Simon will be his decision to make and I doubt he will make it lightly. He knows how much depends on him getting it right, after all he hasn't made his money that supports our club by not listening to what his customers want and what he can offer which suits both parties.

In order to push forward we need to get it sorted quickly as to:

who the manager will be next season- man management skills are as important as paper qualifications,
target players to bring in and let go - preferrably buy rather than loans or at least long term loans,
    play to everyones strength.

THEN GO OUT AND PLAY FOOTBALL!

he has a point about struggling in this division. we will get good players and they will command high pay which we can't afford then leave either on the cheap or for a nice fee.

we'll spend that on another guy who will either flop and get released, or do exactly the same and get shipped out.

swings and roundabouts, happens with near enough every club below the premier league, don't see why we're any different.
