RE: Agreed It seems to escape the people who say 'It's only....', that there are an awful lot of 'It's onlys' in life and they add up to a tidy sum.
Valid point You are so right they do all add up. But on the other hand why do people expect to get something for nothing? It costs money to provide the Barnsley World service, so where is that money going to come from? Loads of fans complain that we don't sign this player or that player, don't pay proper wages to get the best players, etc etc. They also complain that admission prices are too high, pies are too expensive, Barnsley World is too expensive etc etc etc. For me, something is not adding up somewhere. Most fans want and expect the club to spend big on transfer fees and wages, but only if it is someone else's money.
RE: Valid point Barnsley World is a perfect example of charging by stealth. Something that fans used to be able to get for free that someone decided they would make a fast buck out of.
When was Barnsley World free? I've had it since about 2005 and I've always had to pay for it. When was it free? The real point I'm making if all these things were free or cheap or whatever, where would the money come from for the class of player that we need to compete in the Championship?
RE: When was Barnsley World free? The sort of content that is now branded as 'Barnsley World' was originally available free. I'm not saying it's ever been free while it has been called 'Barnsley World'. Another example is Sky. When I first got Sky you just bought the equipment, there was no subscription and you could watch anything. Gradually they scrambled channel after channel and brought in different subscriptions.
Can't remember I remember ages ago there used to be links to commentary streaming sites, but that got stopped because of copyright stuff. I honestly can't remember ever being able to get legitimate free internet commentary on BFC matches, but if you say so I believe you. I agree with you about Sky, it's a right rip off, and the money goes in to the top player's (and their agent's) pockets, and hardly any of it into our club. I can't remember Sky Sports ever being free though. I've had Sky since 1991 and even on the old analogue system Sky Sports had to be paid for. Again, I believe you if you know different.
RE: Can't remember By the time you got it in 1991 there will have been a small charge for Sky Sports (£7-ish rings a bell). Right at the beginning there wasn't. I think 'Movies' was the first to go onto subscription, then 'Sports'. The original customers who bought their equipment on the understanding that they could watch everything shouldn't have had their terms changed.
RE: Can't remember They started charging when the PL began didn't they? Sky had to pay a lot of money to get the rights, they are obviously going to pass the cost on. As for Barnsley World I can't see how anyone can blame the club for charging it. It is a totally seperate entity that was signed up for collectively by the Football League, nowt BFC can do about it.
In all fairness mate I think i'm right in believing that Barnsley world isn't owned by the football club, its run by premium TV, if it was given away for free how would they manage to keep the service going???
Just to show I'm not going senile... ...the Sports Channel was rebranded as Sky Sports on 6th April 1991 and was first encrypted and became a subscription service on 1st September 1992. Sky Movies was indeed the first one to be encrypted in 1990. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Sports http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Movies
Well spotted I DID believe you, you know. I'm the one with the crap memory, as many people on here will testify
