but we also had players like johnny steele and norman rimmington who went on to become icons of the club. although they wer'nt world beaters (so i've heard) they were great players for barnsley.we definately need a hall of fame, a player from each decade.
i think he played for the reds about 5 or six seasons. a lot nowadays but back then don't think it that prolific.
I remember someone in the national media saying that if we'd have stayed in the Prem Redfearn would have been voted Footballer of the Year. Says it all in my book.
look as i keep saying redders was a great player for barnsley and captain fantastic but were talking barnsleys greatest player not greatest season. danny blanchflower and tommy taylor were courted by great teams like spurs and man utd not charlton.
Glavin has always won this until now so its just down to the age of the voters and who you remember in your golden years of supporting the club. Why would anyone who has started watching the reds in last 20 year vote for Glavin? Same as I couldn`t vote for Taylor, Blanchflower and the like, I only wish that I could have seen such great players.
I'm 52 and of Glavin's time but I voted for Redferan as Barnsley's best. Now if there was a poll on the most exciting that would be a different matter.
Re: 30%, was quite a convincing win too so what do you think to this idea putting a player if nominated into hall of fame every ten years or so for each generation.
Personally I see the polls as pointless seeing as though its a team game. There will always be exceptions. Both were top players of their time and we were fortunate to see them and the teams they played in.
i agree its a team game but certain players stand out, on that basis its saying adie moses was better than mick mccarthy because he was in a bettr team.ther'll always be polls like this one way or another i just think trying to compare ronnie glavin and neil redfern to tommy taylor or cec mc'cormack in the present day surely isn't a fair way to do it all these players and others have been great players and servants for the club and a poll like this one every ten years or so will aknowledge that generations greatest player for posterity.
Danny Blanchflower is the best player to have played for Barnsley. Will Neil Redfearn get a Stars of the Past Panini sticker in 15 years time? http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/PANINIS-FOOT...ryZ53667QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Re: sorry, but redfearn for the younger supporters, but we won't ever see another GLA Agree there. My personal favourite too. Having said that....Redders played with his heart on his sleeve and deserves praise of the highest. Two different players in different eras. We can count ourselves fortunate to have witnessed these talents at first hand. I remember the quote that " a blindman knew when King Ronnie had the ball". The crowd stood on their feet in anticipation. Oakwell has been graced by some great players in my time (post 1975). I have no doubt we've had many more pre that time with the likes of Blanchflower and Taylor etc etc. It all boils down to personal satisfaction in the end, and Ronnie IS my KING
I voted for Redders too and I am 41 and remember Glavin so like you say **** all to do with age in my case. I just think Redders contributed more in his time with us than Glavin.
ronnie glavin was far superior on the ball than redders, what that bloke could do with a ball was pure magic nobody was singing only one neil redfearn before promotion season. you could hear them singing one ronnie glavi from ardsley the premiere lgue season was a big factor for redders.
People say that football`s boring Ronnie Glavin`s always scoring Can you hear the Ponty roaring RONNIE IS OUR KING Did we ever have an anthem for Redders? I really can`t remember one, why can`t I we must have, FFS!
i saw them both play and both were great players for barnsley. but anybody who truly saw them both play and says that redders was a better player than glavin is quite frankly by a million miles wrong.
I did and it is all about opinions. Redders was the better player IMO. Glavin was more exciting, but Redfearn was the more complete player. He is my footballing hero.
up to promotion season redders was just a good player for barnsley there was a bit of expectation and excitment when he got the ball thirty yards out or put a forty yard pass onto a sixpence. but as i say if you truly truly saw them both and could honestly compare them glavin would win hands down.the whole ground would light up when he had the ball even old men sang there's only one ronnie glavin.i can understand younger gen voting for redders prmo season n all. but there truly was only one RONNIE GLAVIN.and as i've said that takes nothing away whatsoever from redders being a oakwell legend
Thing is, Taylor and Blanchflower only went on to be great players after they left Oakwell, Redders had his finest season and arguably his best years whilst with us.
