on the whole I agree though I found the Lars Lees book a great read more for the unusual story than anything.
I thought it might be good to revisit this as many Reds fans will be watching from the Barry Murphy Stand for the first time tonight. I started reading this a couple of days ago and I agree with some of the comments above about the writing style. I don’t mind that though as it’s the overall story that interests me. His Oakwell career coincides with when I started watching. As he says (often) it took him a long time to get a regular spot in the first team and as players then only had one year contracts he and his wife were on edge every April and May waiting for next season’s offer to drop on the doormat. Luckily they kept coming. One story so far really stands out for me and it concerns the Man Utd cup tie of 1964. He couldn’t get in the side for that match but, what really angered him, was that the club secretary had organised a Reserve fixture away to Lincoln that Saturday afternoon and seemingly did nothing about getting it postponed. Barry and all the other players would have loved to have been in that crowd of 38,076, seeing the likes of Best, Law and Charlton grace the Oakwell turf. Just shows what a different life footballers had in those days. I’m looking forward to reading the rest.
