It’s only a matter of time before Trump claims that he was responsible for the election of an American Pope

Interesting choice of name. Pope Leo the 1st was “The Great” one of three popes to hold the title.
On paper it looks like a fairly moderate appointment, but not one to lurch the church in a different direction.

I'm in no way religious. At all.
However I learnt today that one of the English Cardinals was born in Batley Carr.
His first appointment was at Holyrood in Barnsley as an Assistant Priest.
Would have loved it had he been elected.

I feel privileged to have watched such a life changing event. I've decided to devote the rest of my life to God and become a Benedictine monk.

He's a key world figure though, so not surprising that there's been comprehensive coverage

Being brought up RC, I remember Arthur Roche as a young curate at Holy Rood. Others on here might, too.

Congratulations to the new pope. A man who allowed a paedophile child abuser to run a SCHOOL despite being investigated for child abuse. An investigation that led to the Catholic church paying his victims 2 million dollars.
Congratulations to the new pope. A man who allowed a paedophile priest to remain at a priory close to a school (and his that information from the school) despite having been removed from public work for decades due to child abuse.
Congratulations to the new pope. A man who tried to cover up and delayed investigations into the molestation of 3 young girls by two priests.

I would say I'm shocked at a man who facilitates child abuse being voted as the new pope but then when the UK for example had 3 cardinals voting for the pope and out of three three, one was criticised by an independent investigation into child sex abuse within the Catholic church which found he had "put the reputation of the Church first." And one refused to defrock a priest after finding that he had sexually abused a disabled boy. It's hardly a surprise. Child abuse facilitators voting for someone who facilitates child abuse.

Anyone who defends a child abuser and facilitates that abuse either by inaction or via their actions is no better than the abuser themselves. They are nothing but utter scum
