School team and Sunday league until knackered mi knee up

 

Played at good youth level, left/centre midfield, decent ability on the ball which was just as well as had no pace.
Was part of team won National Newspapers 5 aside tournament at 14, had trials at couple of clubs at 15 but got injured that never really recovered from.

 

I could have played for England…. But I married the wife instead.

 

Played at school both junior and senior, did regular 5 aside as a late teenager early 20’s, now play on a Thursday at Shaw lane……some weeks I’m like Gazza but most weeks I’m like Dave Regis

 

Coached kids football at school as well - won a few leagues / cups etc. Highlight was winning through to Merseyside finals at Anfield - we played 7 a side on full pitch! Won our semi scoring winning goal in front of the Kop but lost the final. Never forget my little spell on the touchline at Anfield though and neither will the team

 

Captained Shawlands and Holgate. I played full back in a good team, centre back in a not so good one…so played centre back for Holgate! Also played for Travellers Rest kids team for a few years. At 6th form played for the 3rd team, I.e. the one that didn’t have to train every lunchtime! Although I can only remember one 3rd team game, when we thumped a team from Huddersfield 13-0. I just could not be arsed with 5 mile jogs every lunchtime and all that. Lunchtimes were for eating lunch with your mates, or going record shopping when the Tuesday market was on (when the Tuesday market used to be good).

In Liverpool played for the hospital team. You haven’t lived until you’ve played against some pub teams in Liverpool. A fight every match, guaranteed. I played one game when I was doing a placement in A&E at Broadgreen Hospital. We had a game on the Sunday morning and then a quick shower and to A&E for the late shift. During the match I went in a little hard on a winger who was even skinner than me (those were the days). He wasn’t best pleased and limped off. An hour or so later we had handover and my first task was to accompany someone on a trolley round to x-ray. Yep! It wasn’t the last time my greeting a patient was met with a few words of abuse, but this one wasn’t drunk, and I probably deserved the abuse. There was nothing broken anyway, just bruising, the big Jessie!

Not the first time one of our games ended up in me looking after a player in A&E either. By this time I’d qualified and was working in the much busier A&E at Alder Hey, the kids hospital. He never mentioned anything during the game, but our goalie broke his finger. He was one of the electricians and came down to A&E the next day with a rather swollen ring finger, clearly broken at one of the joints, but with the ring still on it. Obviously, the ring needed to come off ASAP or the finger was coming off, but the problem was that Colin was absolutely living in fear of his missus, who was horrible to him. He was therefore too scared to have the ring cut off, for fear of what she would say. Me and the doctor both offered to call her to explain the problem, but he said no and insisted we take the ring off over his broken and very swollen finger.

The doctor put a ring block in to attempt to numb the finger, but there’s only so much that can do. My memory has him with an entinox mask over his face, but I don’t think that’s right, as I can’t imagine we had that in the kids A&E. Either way, I’d covered his finger in liquid soap, but we were getting nowhere. We ended up with some of the tubigrip we used for fingers fastened round either side of the ring and pulled it off via brute force, whilst pleading with Colin to let us cut it off, cos the screaming was so loud it would be scaring the kids and parents in the waiting room. I think the doctor even got him to sign a disclaimer, saying we were doing it against all medical advice, because there was a high likelihood the finger would be permanently damaged. We got it off though, and amazingly the finger healed back to normal, with no obvious deformity. I never met his wife, but if the pain he went through was preferable to facing her with an easily repairable broken ring, I’m glad I didn’t!

 

Played in goal for a very successful Holgate School team, a few games for Barnsley Boys, then later for Nottingham Uni. After that I played 1 game for Worsbrough Bridge (alongside Kenny Brown and Doug O'Connor), then at Barnsley Saturday and Sunday league level for Redfearns, Gawber Road and Travellers Rest. Eventually had to stop playing after snapping a knee ligament, pain like having triplets with no anaesthetic.

When the injury happened, I was facing a one on one with no defender in sight. I was jiggling around as the striker approached, then it happened and I dropped like a stone. The striker collapsed laughing and got dispossessed. We won 1-0 which clinched the Sunday League division 1 title. Never played again except in 5 a side games.

 

Played junior from under 10 to under 16 for kexborough chiefs and barugh boys. Also represented Darton high school.

Had a couple of seasons Sunday league playing for the millers after leaving school then my final two games of 11 a side were for a side in Rotherham in about 2003. I signed all the papers one morning before my debut and scored a brace off the bench, followed up with another the following week. I then got banned and the club fined £50 as I apparently wasn't registered correctly and the club that I had made my debut against complained to the league. Haven't played since other than odd five a side.

 

Played in West Riding Amateur League for along time 16 till 44 mostly second team, coached kids 5 years to 16 and managed open age gaining promotion to West riding County Premiership, loved being coached by the wee man in the early 2000. Ronnie Glavin was an a very good coach

 

As a kid I was a striker and was the first to get 100 goals for my club and represented Harrogate & Craven district schools. As the years went by I played ctr midfield and ended up as ctr half. Probably because I lost all my pace but at 6ft3in was really good in the air.

The highest level I achieved was North East Counties for Harrogate Railway (in the same team as Darren Sheridan) and whilst there went to Huddersfield on trial with about 40 others. I got to the last 8 but never made it. Ended up in pub leagues until I ruptured my ACL aged 37.

My last game, I achieved one of my dreams playing on Oakwell with other fans at the end of the season two years ago.

Nowadays I coach Harrogate Railway U13’s and we are currently top of the league.

 

Didn’t play much as I was busy most weekends with martial arts until I was 15/16 and we had a team at Ward Green that played in a Barnsley league. I played mostly right wing, but also filled in at right back, centre mid, as a number 10 and was back up goalkeeper. Could always pick a head out from a corner.
Remember having to go in goal when we played at Lundwood after our goalie got punched in the face by their striker.
When we were 17/18 6 or 7 of us decided we’d join the men’s 5 a side league down at Dorothy Hyman on that shocking astroturf pitch that was more sand than turf. Spent an hour a week being kicked up in the air by grizzly old blokes who’s mantra was “can’t run with no legs”.
Then just dabbled with 5-a-sides through works or mates groups. Haven’t played since last year cos of other commitments.
I now help coach an Athersley Rec junior side my lad plays in.

 

I was crap, I'll put that out straight away. Played for Ripon uni in the Harrogate and District league, think I got a single assist. Mostly used to make up numbers due to us being out on the Saturday night. Used to have to play against Wealstun Prison which was interesting!

 

I'm proper rubbish. Played for school and then was captain of the college's second team at Uni, mainly because I was the only one who could be arsed to sort venues, refs etc. Not played any structured football since then, just occasional 5 a sides, but I am very poor.

So basically a similar standard to Max Watters.

 

I played against the Balinese national team in a televised game. HMS Arethusa called into Bali and games were arranged against the Balinese, mainly the armed forces. I was a Hockey player to very high standard and played goal. We played Bali in the morning and went to the football match straight from the game.
The clubswinger said they were short a player and I was in goal. I never played football since leaving school, I had no left foot and they would have been as well putting a dustbin in the nets. We did win and I had very little to do. It was only later we found all the games had been on TV the lads had seen it in various bars that evening.

I started out at 6 with my local side, the Royston Dynamoes. We had a great crop as luck would have it and we won at least one trophy, be that the league or one of the cups, every year. Culminating in us winning a treble when I was around 10 iirrc. I was a centre-forward. Not prolific by any means but I scored my fair share. I've also been able to control a ball coming at me from pretty much anywhere. My dad used to take me on Oakwood field behind our house and boot the ball at me, and up in the air and get me to trap it or bring it down with different parts of my body.

Played until I discovered drink and women at around 17/18. I finished off playing for Worsborough Bridge. Also had trials at 12/13 for my beloved BFC (as most kids did tbf).

Now I spend my evenings and weekends coaching Wombwell Town U10's which my Son plays for.

 

Played for my little school as a winger from 8 - 12 yo and was considered decent, just missing out on Bradford Boys trials. Took a bad knock to my shin at 11 which still niggles me today.
Moving to big school I was too easily intimidated by new kids from other schools challenging for MY position.
Didn't play again until a pub side in my 20s. Started as keeper - I was so crap I won most improved player award 4 years on the trot. Finished off with 6 seasons as a not too shabby centre floorboard at Bradford Sunday alliance level. Scored a few and put myself about, but as we dropped through the leagues I got fed up of playing against defenders who just wanted to carry on their Saturday night fight.
Gave up early 30s but regret not carrying on.
My last competitive match was on Guiseleys pitch in my 40s, in the same team as Brian Deane and Tony Agana.

To the lad above who feels he really should start playing more, just do it. I will eternally regret not playing more football and cricket.

 

I played for Wombwell High and then for Barnsley College when I went there, also played for a few Sunday league teams (Hoyland Falcons as a junior then Lundwood and Wombwell Main as I got older)

Played as a left back or a centre back depending on what the team needed or what I fancied, I think I definitely preferred playing centre back though as the battle with the strikers is what got me there on a Sunday morning.

It was a 5 a side match that my glittering career ended, when to turn with the ball and my studs got caught in the grass but I kept turning and blew my knee out. Did all the rehab to get it better and stronger for months but the first game back within 5 minutes my knee went again, so I decided to call it a day at the grand old age of 26.

The worst bit about that Injury was the person marking Me was telling me to get up and that he hadn't even touched me, I ******* know that you *******.

Just something extra to add on, in the year above me at Hoyland Falcons was a certain Jordan Rhodes. Both me and my dad watched one of his games one day where he scored two, but came away crying because his dad bollocked him for not playing good enough.
