I did support them in my formative years. My Dad managed the Main Stand at Belle Vue and became great friends with the then manager Peter Doherty. On a Sunday we could have up to five Rovers players ( including the late Harry Gregg who were all at that time single lads) over to ours for Sunday dinner ( others were Northern Ireland international Kit Lawlor, a winger Chris Giles, Scots centre back Bill Patterson and a Scots centre forward Arthur Adey.) The then Chair ( Hubert Bates) fell out with Doherty and my Dad had a run in with him which lead to us not going anymore. Later you had a Chairman who to claim insurance decided to attempt to burn the ground down. Later I began playing myself and was involved in running a local Sunday league club. Doncaster took several of our players on trial. They treated them appallingly i.e they took three of our lads North to play Newcastle United Juniors and from leaving Doncaster to getting back from Newcastle around 10.30 pm didn't provide them with anything to eat or drink. I had a difference of opinion with one of the Directors over the incident and because of his haughty/obnoxious attitude I vowed that I would never ever support Doncaster Rovers ever again. Relocated to Wakefield in 1997, attended my first Reds game in 1998 and as the saying goes the rest is now history.
Well remember daughter of the owner when I worked in Donny telling a tale about a couple who’d complained about their meal at an Italian in Bawtry favoured by the well heeled; “ She was making a right fuss but the food is always good in there she was just after a discount, I did wonder who they thought they were to complain about the food, they werent even wearing anything designer !!” Thats the mindset I’m talking about, for some reason they believe they're a cut above.
Ideally lose neither yes, but in my opinion if I had to choose to lose just one id pick to lose brown over Woodrow. Brown is a great athlete and suits our style superbly but lacks that clinical edge we need to win us games. Hopefully both our in our side when the window shuts though.
Woodrow looked like he wasnt interested after lockdown, I'm not a massive brown fan as a striker but out wide his stats speak for themself.
Is that Kevin McDonald. ? Used to deal with Kev when I worked in the Building Section at YPO. He used to live in Toll Bar near Donny. As a plumber, he broke his wrist trying to bend some copper pipe and got the idea of making service pipes out of plastic. Bought an extruder from Exchange and Mart and manufactured his first pipes in his garage. Reversed the name Toll Bar into BARTOL Plastics and after selling up later he then went on to form McDee ( toilet seat manufacturer) and later Polypipe. Very shrewd lad was Kevin.
Bless them some bitter comments on there, I think donny fans have a bee in there bonnet as doncaster is a bigger town than barnsley but footballing wise rovers have always been in our shadows, historically as long as I've been watching us we have mostly been in a higher league, john ryan came out with arsenal of the north rubbish when they went to the championship but the just can pull the crowds, other season under struber friday night at the keepmoat, on sky just short of 4k barnsley fans in the ground donny did a ticket offer for there own fans and the total attendance was still less than 12k so below 8k donny fans in attendance.
how old are you (PM if you want), I grew up round the corner and my auntie lived a few doors away from you
the way I read it was pretty even, some numpties but the majority were reasonable. Just like here when we discuss them - except there's a hardcore of Barnsley fans can't see a Donny thread without making Gypsy jibes.
Wasn't great post lockdown Woodrow that's for sure but unless someone pays big he remains with us again and I know which I back most to score 10 this season. Brown is so effective playing out wide but we don't use a formation that suits him currently so he is a bit wasted
Out of order here Nudge, you decide where you want to spend your money and who you support. I appreciate all fans who want to join me in watching the reds and as long as they behave themselves and want us to win and feel the joy when we do. My nephew is Irish and lives near Cork, I took him to a match when he was just a kid and he’s been a fan ever since. I suppose by your measure he should support Cork City. Last time we played West Ham at the Boleyn game I spent the afternoon talking to fans who’d come from Norway to support us. According to you they shouldn’t even come from as far as Donny..
Omitted to mention, my wife's family are all originally Barnsley born and bred re- Wombwell and Kendray, although they all now live in different parts of the UK re- Donny, Ynys Mon, Leicester, Sheffield etc.
Great to see Gerhard firmly pinning his colours to the mast. Let's hope the board listens. https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/spo...fcs-interest-doncaster-rovers-captain-2960208
When I worked at Yorkshire Bank in the early 80's I used to have to sit in the canteen at Grimethorpe Colliery in a suit & tie, trying to persuade miners to open a bank account to get their wages paid into. That was character building.
I think you should support who you want,if you support ( go to games when possible) then good on you, its the ones who are fans of clubs, have no affiliation/ connection/ family ties to a club but are fans of them because they were once good, have a good fan base, in our case Leeds and the mid weekend, my two sons are Wednesday season ticket holders, live in Upton, i dont have an issue at all with that because they go, plus they were influenced by their Grandad whilst I was away in the Army
jeez, when we left donny ( at 15) we moved to upton guest close at the top of school st next to the metal rocket, i then got married ( didnt have to we could have hung on a couple of days, both 16) and got a pit house down the "other end" on field lane 'til i said "**** the pit" and joined up
