Three best Barnsley goals? - Darren Barnard's famous volley to put us 6-0 up against Huddisfield (I remember the highlights on Sky TV 'AND IT'S SIX OF THE BEST FOR BARNSLEY AT HALF TIME' ha ha) - Ian Banks' over head bicycle style volley against Rotherham in about 82 (for his hatrick). - (Super) John Hendrie's opener against Sheffield United at Oakwell during our promotion season (lovely passing move, Nicky Eaden cut it back from the line inside the box, Hendrie on the corner of the six yard box, dummied to hit on the turn right foot to near post, but let it run through his legs and clipped it with his right back heel to the far post - keeper bought it lock stock and barrel). We totally outclassed the pigs that day. Went on to win 2-0 with another sensational passing move goal. There are so many others. Can anyone remember when Sheffield United had Steve Bruce in charge, they came to ours and we out played them from early in the game - Hignett scored a corker early on to put us 1-0 up. Late late on - 86 minute or so - pigs launch a long desperate ball into our box, mix-up with keeper and Morgan ensues, ball bounces when in never should have, and their striker toe poked it in. Their fans went mental, Steve Bruce came out of the dugout like some sort of David Pleat on amphetamines. Hignett went up the other end, ball bounced on the edge of the area, thank you very much this is for the bottom corner and three points. 'YOU'RE NOT SINGING ANY MORE! YOU'RE NOT SINGING ANY MORE!'. My dad missed that goal because he left in disgust after the equaliser - it all happened that late - ha ha.
Mick Clarke away at Stoke mid-80s? After years of watching him run like lightening down the wing and then tripping over the ball, this time he got it right and blasted it in the top corner. Afterwards, he got so excited he jumped so high that the Chronicle photographer missed the top half of his head. Had the picture on my wall for ages. Anyone else as sad as me and remember it?
Cooperman against Leicester late 80s Ball played up to him about twenty yards out and he takes in on his chest and volleys straight past the keeper. Superb athleticism as the ball came over his shoulder and he took it and smashed it home in one movement. Wish we had a player as aggresive up front now. No desrespect to our other strikers.
RE: REDFERN V NEWCASTLE at st james seem to remember he scored a screamer from 40 yrds when newcastle were 10 pts clear in the prem. ithink we lost 3-1 in the end though but a smashing goal or am i dreaming?
I'm his dad and I ran back into the ground and bumped into a another fan coming out. We were both dancing and said in one voice "deeda bleeders!". Great memories that only football can give you.
RE: REDFERN V NEWCASTLE Remeber losing 2-1 to Newcastle with Fjortoft scoring and smashing into the post at the same time. Can't remember if it was at St James' or not.
1) Darren Barnard vs. Huddersfield Town 1998 ; 2) Trevor Aylott vs Brighton 1981 ; 3) John MacDonald vs Grimsby Town 1987 .
It was in the league cup in 1994 I lived there at the time. We took the lead through the aforementioned Redfearn scorcher but went on to lose 2-1 on the night. Andy Cole got both IIRC. We then lost the home leg 1-0 at Oakwell so went out 3-1 on aggregate. It was one of those goals where everyone in the ground was out of their seat applauding, regardless of who they were supporting.
Own goal by Paul Stancliffe for Wolves v Reds Stuart Rimmer breaks down the right wing and with absolutely no support rolls a harmless ball across goal. Stancliffe tries to clear but it hits his standing foot and trickles over the line to the amusement of all us that had been giving him stick all afternoon for being an ex blade.
Joe Hayes v Rochdale 1965 We beat them 5-0 at Oakwell. It was similar to Archies screamer. As I recall it was at the Kop end. It may have been the only goal he scored for us. For those who do not remember him he was an inside forward (midfielder) who had played for Manchester City. of course by the time he was signed by us he was definately in the twilight of his career.
