Re: Willie Ferry - Urban Legend

What is it with this Willie Ferry nonsense?? From my recollections BFC signed him from a local non league club - it could even have been somebody like Worsbro Bridge it was that far down the football pyramid. The guy played 3 maybe 4 times and then moved on. He did actually score at Portsmouth away (1 goal in 4 games....Mossto would kill for that ratio!).

The problem for this guy is he had a name (still has probably!) that made him sound like a 70s Wrestler - maybe 'fighting' Bid Daddy on World of Sport.............and to be fair he didn't look much more athletic than Bid Daddy either. However, a lot of people are jumping onto the bandwagon here and living on a perpetuated myth. How can you judge someone who only played a few games. It would be like saying the best player ever at Barnsley was David Hirst (played around 18 times so presumably not long enough to make a judgement).

Add in the fact that he was a local boy from non league football and boy was he a scapegoat before he had even chance to lace his boots up.

Willie Ferry - lay off please!!

    Absolute crap !!

We signed him from Scnuthorpe United reserves , he was NOT a local lad signed from local league football . He was the worse striker ever to play for Barnsley , he had no discernable talent whatsoever . The fact that he managed to get on the score sheet once at Portsmouth does not make one iota of difference . By the same token , Mike Tuner's goal at Ipswich didn't make him a goalscoring machine either .
As for moving on , neither had the ability to make the grade at another league club.
Ferry was never made a scapegoat by the fans at that time . If anything , his lack of ability brought sympathy from the terraces . Supporters quickly realised he was way out of his depth and vented their anger against Allan Clarke for putting the lad in the team in the first place .
As for comparing Ferry with Mostto , words fail me .

    Blimey

That told him. Got owt to say about John Pearson?!! I reckon he could push Willie Ferry for that title.

You can tell I'm on afternoons !!

I hate working afternoon shifts , it always makes me a grumpy old git !!
At least John Pearson can claim he made himself a career in the professional game , despite being absolute garbage for Barnsley . At a cost of £100 000 too !!

    To be fair

I have a grudging respect for him. Seen him in the gym at Hillsbro a few times & he always stops & talks to folks. You've gotta respect a guy who makes no apology for his allegiance (even if it is to Wednesday), and he's a damn site better than Keith Edwards. Didn't realise he'd had such a hard time with his daughter though.

Was never a good player for us ... tallest man in a Reds shirt never to have won the ball in the air.

    It certainly puts football issues

In their true place . Football always has been and always will be just a game . There are things that are far more important .

    RE: Absolute crap !!

Ok so he was from Scnuthorpe - hardly otherside of the world is it? - and at the time Scunny would be a struggling Div 4 team - so a fair bit lower down than we were in the 'pyramid'.

He may have been total crap in those 4 games - he may not - but the point is, we signed - on paper at least - a no hoper - who then in 4 games looked out of his depth (although again how anyone can remember the specifics of so few games after all these years seems unusual). On the other hand, lavishly splash out £400k on a Peruvian International and suddenly we are prepared to give the guy all the time in the world and not be so quick to judge.

I was really trying to say the guy got a raw deal partly because of his background - and yes, in his very few games for the club he may well have not looked the part - but back to basics - how the hell can you say he is one of Barnsley FC's worst fowards when he never got a decent run - and if the club had coached and perserved he could have possibly turned out to be a reasonable foward.

I remember Ian Banks got a **** load of abuse after a few games but got the opportunity Ferry never had to prove his critics wrong. So surely, if you are judging either our Best or Worst players it has to be done over a longer spell of games than the handful Ferry had?

    Bid Daddy...

Now he was a wrestler... his forearm smash whilst holding the gavell was legendary.

RE: Out of interest (cos you didn't say they had to be Tarn players)...

Among the worst must be Allen Simonson when he played at Charlton and Thomas Brolin at Leeds. Both came with massive reputations and both were crap.

If Ferry had been any good

and it was just us at Barnsley that thought he was ****, how come no-one else ever gave him a chance?
The reason is that he was the WORST man ever to get the chance of playing professional football.
It is not an Urban Myth its a fact. I saw the goal he scored and I do not lie in saying that even Dave Regis and Mostto would have put it away, How on earth Clarke actually signed him is a complete mystery!
He made the lad that Souness signed at Southampton look like Pele!

RE: If Ferry had been any good

    4 bad games = ****??

You start a new job and found iT hard to settle in your first week you would therefore find it reasonable to be labelled ****? Other than his goal can you honestly tell me you can remember much if anything about WF??

There's 1000s of would be footballers who might have made it wih a bit of luck here and there. Ferry had his very limited chance and blew it wih BFC but please don't tell me a footballer is bad - OR good - based on 4 performances. .................now that Dave Regis did have a reasonable number of chances and yes, he was pants I agree!

All I can say is for every Jonathan Walters there is a Willie Ferry - but much of it can be down to luck and not necessarily the arributes or otherwise of the footballer in question.

RE: If Ferry had been any good

Did you actually watch Ferry at all.
He could not run, he could not pass, he ended up playing for someone like North Ferriby(or such like)
he may have been a nice guy and I would not say anything about his persona, but as a footballer he had 1 thing missing , he could not play football at the appropriate standard,

If I started a job and found out I could not do it, or that I was **** at it, then yes I would expect to be sacked !!

All I can ever go on is what I see, that may not be the same as others, but it is a game of differing opinions, just like I cant see Mostto ever doing the biz, but others think he will be great.

    Willie Ferry started 4 games

Miguel Mostto's started 6 . I'm harsh to judge Ferry , so does the same apply to anyone judging Mostto ? The reason people can still recall his performances after 21 years is because they were so bad . Ferry wasn't leaving to play in a foreign country , thousands of miles away from home and family and unable to speak the language . That's why people are willing to cut Mostto a bit a slack , whilst he adjusts to his new surroundings .
