The Stones haven't recorded an album worth of material worth listening to in my lifetime. I'm now 50. And neither were as good in the 60s as The Kinks.
Loved TMTCH but my records are on vinyl/CD and I can only listen to Spotify when I'm working - probably the band I'm missing the most from streaming services.
One band I haven't seen mentioned yet is the Velvet Underground - along with the Stooges and MC5 they laid the groundwork and really influenced the next 50 years of alternative music. With the work of John Cale and Lou Reed, music would have been very different and many of the bands mentioned above wouldn't have existed as they did. On a similar note, Kraftwerk for electronic music.
The OP doesn't ask for the best band for ever. Having seen both in their prime I still think(know) the Stones shade it. Bloody kids
I know. I was still a fan and saw them another 8 or so times after that but their 80s output is faultless
Agree with Genesis (hence the name, nothing to do with long ball football!). Amazing live and as you say incredibly versatile. Sad that their last album was 30 years ago this year. They should have released half a dozen more in that time.
You don’t need to be a maestro to get a good band going. Friendship over musicianship every day. Respect your comrades, respect your instrument, respect your audience & generally the whole world. &, y’know. Try to have an original idea, at least once a week. Ladies & Gentlemen. America’s last truly great band.
Love the IRS stuff, but honestly think they carried on getting better as they aged, especially as a live band. New Adventures was their absolute peak for me. The post-Berry output is less consistent, but I still think that Up and Accelerate can stand alongside anything they recorded.
I know them, I used to work with Joe the drummer…. I think he’d find it amusing to be described as the best band ever though.
