    RE: No why?

Maybe not for you, but all of the above are regarded as icons for most people. Stick Sid Vicious and Marc Bolan in there too...

Can't you see my argument? George Harrison died...but he isn't regarded in the same way as Lennon...neither will Paul McCartney or Cliff Richard....they are just too....safe.

We have to explore why fundamentally flawed people effect the most out pouring of grief.

    RE: No why?

Can't you see the pattern, though?
They (Bolan, Lennon, Vicious) became legends because they all died in some tragic way.

George Harrison died of lung cancer at the age of ~60... if he had been murdered in 1967 he would have become the biggest "icon" of the last century.

Oh yes, I agree...and in a way...Best's death which was constantly hyped up by the media was very similar. The other thing to ask of course, is why vulnerable, flawed genius' do tend to die in this way.

Fate maybe, or just the lifestyle they lead?

    Interesting - are there any?

    Even Einstein was flawed...Brian Wilson..another legendary genius...flawed...

What's more, they all seem to have the same flaws. Violent streaks, sensitivity, addictions, vulnerabilty...

    Why?

    RE: No why?

Well, that's a very good question...
John Lennon died because he got much too famous, the rock 'n' roll lifestyle killed Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain couldn't handle the pressure (or then he was murdered)... Marc Bolan was 'a little' unlucky maybe (died in a car crash), but he too was coming back home from a party in the middle of the night, so who knows what really happened there...
James Dean only starred in a few films, but he became a legend as soon as he died. If he hadn't died in that road accident, no one would talk about him anymore. If Che Guevara hadn't been caught in Bolivia and was still alive today, you wouldn't see his face in all those t-shirts. Kurt Cobain's death made Nirvana one of the most overhyped (and overrated) bands of the 90's.

So, you need to die young and in some tragic way if you want to become a legend.
Bob Dylan is an exception though, he's odd.

Don't we all have flaws though?

It's just that a genius gets the publicity and thouse flaws get exaggerated.

Nirvana were massive even before Cobain died - perhaps what it has done is allow the music to live on longer.

p.s. By definition you cannot "over-hype" something.

I don't think he understands that "Icons" to one generation

    are not "Icons" to another.
