Easier to keep a team up than get one promoted. Pinnock was overlooked 4th choice. Mowatt played out of position then loaned out harvey barnes for half a season mcburnie for the other half. And we went down by 1 point was it on the last game so fine margins

Iley was under rated. Was the John the Baptist figure for Allan Clarke.

Ok we were relageted by 1 point we had a head coach who didnt want to be here for half a season and another doing cat impressions at half time for the last half. I still think a more experienced head coach would have kept us up it was a expensively assembled squad and we had alot of quality in there you have just said your self in the team that stendel, had we had that plus yiadom, hammill gardner, barnes, mcburnie, bradshaw....

Better than Big Val then? A bit too soon to come to that conclusion for me.

Fully committed. Val did brilliantly but Covid, lack of fans and rule changes will add a a little asterisk against his achievements for me.

Moore didn't sign 'til January, we basically replaced an entire squad that pre season after losing the spine of the team and replaced them with what turned out to be good league one players - which they proved the year after.

Stendel was fortunate to inherit a League One squad in Leagie One after a year being toughened up in the Champ. Heckingbottom was unfortunate to inherit a League One squad for the Championship.

The majority of that squad have played championship and higher ever since. We had a player who had played over 110 championship games who was mostly a center mid we played him on the left wing away at Bristol then loaned him out. Not really getting into the hecky thing both managers had a mare we were relegated by 1 point so many games where we were poorly managed a more experienced coach would have kept us up.

We're 9 games in to a 46 game season. Duff has done well since arriving but he's had some wobbles. Can't really make comparisons at this stage. If we'd won 9 on the bounce I could see the logic. It's a long season. I hope you are proved right, of course, but let's not get carried away.

Never really rated Stendal as a football manager. Absolutely lovely bloke who put his heart & soul into the club & community, but he got found out when we got promoted. He was tactically inept let’s be reyt!

He also lost his keeper, two centre backs and centre forward.

He maybe tactically inept but he was without the spine of the team that helped win promotion.

Totally agree. I’ve warmed to duff and I like the fact he’s open to what the situation is and what he’s got to work with. He’s a realist and can see a project at Barnsley. He knows there’s huge expectation amongst the fans but he knows not to get carried away.

The players definitely seemed to have bought into his ideas quickly and he’s getting a tune out of players that were quickly overlooked by previous head coaches. There’s a reason why the fans have been crying out for an English coach as much as the players probably have. Really happy with progress so far.

I take issue on your "English coach" - I think a great many fans dont care as long as he is a good coach - there werent too many complaints about Stendell or Val not being English - or even Struber for that matter - and we have had plenty of pretty poor English managers though few could match Schopp and Poya for total ineptitude - even the racist fans would be happy with a British coach and wouldnt complain at a good Scot or Welshman
For me Duff is so far looking decent - I dont care that he is English any more than I cared that Helik wasnt and most fans would be of the same opinion

I understand the fans to an extent, but Covid? And the 5 subs rules applied to everyone, and its same again this season. I think we don't rate Val as highly as we should due to the football, but personally I think he deserves even more credit for that, realised we couldn't play nice football, so molded the squad to something what could compete and he did an excellent job doing that

You could also argue i could get a team promoted with davies, mawson, roberts, connor, brownhill, scowen, hammill, winnall, Ashley fletcher etc
You still have to give the manager credit the way stendel did it his style of play, inherited a squad just relegated lacking confidence, unbeaten at home all season. Shame he didnt have a plan B when promoted.

The messiah he is not, don’t care what anyone says tactically this bloke hasn’t a clue.. best manager since Wilson!! He isn’t the best manager we’ve had in the last 5 years stendel and val streets ahead of him! With those two we had an identity a way of playing I haven’t a clue we were trying to do under duff one minute we’re fannying around at back the next we’re trying to play a long diagonal ball out to Williams.. I’m not sold one bit on him I don’t think even when we’ve won we’ve played well!!
