I think we battered Jump that day, I've scored so many great goals it's hard to remember. I got at least four that game.
Give up. We'd give owt just to see a goal at Oakwell at the mo. They all count. Best 2 I've seen. Barnard vs Huddersfield, and Ginola for Spurs against us.
The Ginola goal is over-rated, nobody put a tackle in. We can all do that if we are not challenged. The Barnard goal v Spurs the year before deserves a mention - 17 passes and wallop!! Would have loved to have been in the Ponty that night!
Yep for me Barnards goal that was the best strike, technically very difficult to pull off. Best in another sense, Clint getting the second goal to seal promotion to the premiere league against Bradford City :0
The 7-1 mauling of Huddersfield was one of my first matches, I was only a nipper but at least I can say I was there not to rub it in or anything!
On another note, I also liked Vaz Te's screamer in the first 8 seconds. But, that's just personal preference
The Barnard one against Udders has got to be the best IMO, it's right up there in my all-time goals in any football.
Yes, and there was an Adie Moses sized hole in our defence too, after Ginola had done what he was more famous for a short while earlier and got Moses sent off. Me and my mate Jamie (Spurs fan who was at the game) regularly have this argument!
I could only watch Barnard's goal from the luxury of a pub in Marylebone, as I didn't fancy using a day off (d'oh!), so I would say that Howard's is the best I've seen at Oakwell. I was, ahem, rather refreshed at that game after an early Londontykes start to the day and had to watch the highlights the next day to confirm that it was as good as what I thought I'd seen and not the beer playing tricks with my eyes. Having said that, I was only a nipper in 1981/82 so beer didn't come into this one, but on watching Banger's 'overhead kick' at Millmoor many years later I was disappointed to see that my eyes must have been playing tricks, as it wasn't half as spectacular as I remembered!
Howards goal in that game was runner up in the goal of the season competiton, behind Cardiff's winner that day iirc. Think they made about 30 passes in the build up.
Oh I dunno, it was sort of overhead but not quite bicycle. The fact it was on the turn, back to goal on a standing foot makes it more special. He must have been watching Kirk Balk first years the week before and copied my technique when I scored an identical goal v Wombwell High.
A player by the name of Toby tyke... 1998.. Ran the entire length of the pitch showing amazing ball control. Made it to the box were he was unfairly challenged and a penalty awarded. He stepped up with the confidence of a thousand men and slotted it into the net. The crowed went mental. Best solo effort leading to a goal in all history
Sunshine school! That's it... We used to have our school dinners there, entire school marched across west street every dinner time.
Anthony Kay versus Plymouth on a Tuesday night... near enough half way line and it just looped in off the half volley
Re: That Darren Barnard goal Nah. Mr C would have scored one much better. He'll not tell anyone about it though.
I remember that, but not quite as near the goal line as you're suggesting! If he'd have hit it a 1000 times over, it would have gone anywhere but that top corner
As the great Maradona said, after scoring the second goal against England in 1986, "si, era una buena gol, pero no tan bueno como el gol de Mr Caton en Poggy rec en 1976."
Re: That Darren Barnard goal Unfortunately, video cameras were not common in the comprehensive schools of Sth Yorks in the early 80s. It will all remain myth and hearsay.
