Not sure which is my fave in terms of quality of music, but standout performances include: Foos at Manc Apollo, May '97 (my first gig). Jimmy Eat World, Shef Octagon, June '05. Powderfinger at Manc Academy, Dec '07. Death Cab for Cutie, Manc Academy, Nov '15. Seen so many, hard to choose. I prefer smaller venues to arenas etc.
One of the best I've seen was a band from New Orelans called Hot Eight Brass Band - their work is playing behind the Rugby adverts at the minute , it's an instrumental version of Love will tear us apart. Best probably REM at Huddersfield - Beautiful South were supporting them James in Manchester Watched the Monkees in Liverpool - they were brilliant
I forget the name of the venue. It wasn't big. In Manchester. They were at their peak at the time. Glad you enjoyed them too. It was a great night.
Two sadly missed “smaller” venues were Warehouse 23 at Wakey and the Clocktower Leeds. I’ve seen Peter Hook at both places doing the entire Joy Division set and you’re right when you say that the small venues have that something extra. Have also seen Hookey at Manchester Uni
Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. Pick any of the gigs I saw around 1990/1991. Utterly feral, loud, mesmerizing and beyond brilliant. Just some thing else. Social commentary, a punk spirit that just felt so alive. Great times.
I went and saw The Cribs at the Roundhouse in Camden on Friday night. Was my 121st Cribs gig so I’d have to include one of those I suppose - Williamsburg Hall in Brooklyn was a bit mental and epic as a whole day. This is right up there for me as well. Was pretty special. As was New Order at Glastonbury on the Other Stage about six years ago. I was at that same tour but at Brixton Academy. Around 50% of the crowd left after the Monkeys finished which was just mental. Maximo Park struggled a bit trying to close the show.
best gigs in terms of 'before they were big'... oasis, sheffield octagon, dec 1994 arctic monkeys, sheffield plug, oct 2005 verve, sheffield leadmill, aug 1997 st vincent, brudenell social club, nov 2011 caribou, brudenell social club, nov 2010 fontaines dc, brudenell social club, apr 2019 black country new road, end of the road festival, aug 2019 best in terms of slack-jawed admiration... radiohead, primavera sound 2016 pj harvey, primavera sound 2016 stereolab, hebden bridge trades club, sep 2021
Too many great ones to mention all. Green day. Was probably the best rock concert indoors. U2 several times outdoors. Cyndi Lauper individual artist. (4 times) But alongside some big headline acts, I have enjoyed the support more. Eg Big country, Thunder. Styx. ( big bands in their own right btw) Big Country at Birdwell in November btw. Great coup. Big shout for some fantastic cover bands on the pub/club circuit. Although not a cover band I will be gutted if ODS (Saxon) do not reform. Graham Oliver.( original) Brian O’shaughnessy. Et Al. Steve Dawson (original base guitarist. Not him of BBS fame) having hung up his guitar.
did you manage to see Dream Theater with Portnoy or was it with Mangini? I’ve seen them with both and for me, the showmanship of Portnoy made the pre Mangini shows something else. Nevertheless, what a band!
I saw Idles in Belfast and they were fantastic. Not a fan of their music generally, but I thought Bastille were brilliant at Leeds Fest a few years ago too.
I saw Queen at Milton Keynes Bowl in the summer of 82 just before I joined the Army. Probably the best but a hard choice because Fleetwood Mac and Aerosmith were also pretty spectacular.
Metallica x2 Dream Theater x4 Frankie Valli Opeth Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott Red Hot Chili Peppers x3 Foo Fighters Queens of the Stoneage Anthrax Lamb of God All fantastic shows despite differing styles. It’s way too hard to single out the best one!
Sadly never saw Carter live. One of my mates is a huge fan, saw them many times and said they were utterly mental. Seen plenty of footage on YouTube and really regret not seeing them at least once. Sleaford Mods gigs seem to have a similar vibe.
The birthday party are one of the bands I wish I’d got to see, I’ve seen nick cave 3 times, one not long since actually and enjoyed them all, however with Grinderman was the one I enjoyed the most
Deep Purple 1973 Sheffield City Hall with Nazareth Deep Purple 1974 Sheffield City Hall with ELF (Ronnie Dio) The Tubes 1976 Manchester Free Trade Hall Lynyrd Skynyrd 1976 Knebworth with Rolling Stones Shinedown 2009 Cockpit Leeds
Status Quo Although special mention to Showaddywaddy who were on at Pussycats Wakey ( or whatever name it was then) how anybody can keep up that level of jiving/ dancing and still sing deserves a mention!
Saw Tom Petty at Hyde Park just before he died. That was a special day. Billy Bragg at the anti Apartheid march at Clapham Common in 85 was another great day . Best of all was .................................Kate Bush at Hammersmith 5? years ago. Would have paid any amount of money to see that - truly amazing.
