First time was around 09ish, with Portnoy on their Black Clouds & silver linings tour, then a couple of years later with Mangini. Incredible both times! My mate is in the music production game, so he insists we stand next to front of house, I’ll never forget the bloke who was controlling the lights, he didn’t miss a beat! He had some right twitchy eyes going so must have been doing it years.
Seeing Chili Peppers again in June, can’t wait to see John back doing what he does best! He’s a genius, as is Flea tbh!
Bet there’s many of wish we’d been at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in ‘76 when Buzzcocks supported the Pistols. How many were there ? Maybe 3 dozen but many became famous in their own right.
Not even sure it’s a good claim. Surely I could have found better things to do in my late 20’s? Although they used to tour all the bloody time! Was worried about them 4/5 years ago as lost their way a touch. This new tour they’ve been smashing it. Roundhouse was sold out which takes some doing, as was Manchester Academy. Piece Hall headliners last Summer as well.
They're definitely back on form now. Dave Grohl played a crucial role by all accounts. They were brilliant in Sheffield the other week.
Night Network really is a return to form. Complete album and far flung from the pretty terrible 24/7 Rock Star. Still can’t figure out why I wasn’t at the Sheffield gig. Looked great!
Crikey! This is a subjective issue because we all like what we like. Went along to Elland Road in the 80’s to see U2 as my wife was a big fan and they left me cold yet I’ve heard it mentioned before as a phenomenal day. My highlights of the 80’s was seeing Lloyd Cole & the Commotions at the City Hall but in the moment I used to really enjoy nights following The Gents at Antonio’s and Pusseycats - used to do a combination of their own stuff and covers of The Jam and Style Council. More recently I saw OMD at The Arena where Andy McClusky had the audience buzzing ( although I think the only drugs on offer in the crowd was Sanategen and Cod Liver Oil pills!).
Sonic Youth with Pavement - Leeds T&C 1992 Nirvana - Bradford 1991 Pixies -Reading Festival 1990 PJ Harvey - Hull Adelphi 1992 Pearl Jam - Leeds 2014 Foo Fighters London 2018 too many Fall & Wedding Present to choose from…
Missed them every time at Tramlines. Mainly because inexcusably I’ve missed every Tramlines. Never understood why.
In no particular order:- The Clash - Manchester Apollo (although Sheffield Lyceum also same tour ad had a few beers with them afterwards) - Also saw U2 at the Lyceum same week. Echo & The Bunnymen - Buxton Pavillion Gardens - Making Shine So Hard Movie. Last time I wore the camo. Gene - Sheffield Uni David Byrne - Sheff City Hall The Cure - Sheffield Poly Devo - Sheff City Hall 10,000 Maniacs - Columbus, Ohio Vets Memorial Hall Aztec Camera + Orange Juice - Sheffield City Hall Crowded House - Hammersmith Odeon Foo Fighters - Sheff Arena (also great at Etihad) Future Islands - Manchester Apollo We Were Promised Jetpacks - Manchester Gorilla (First gig post covid so memorial if only for that) Danny Wilson - Sheffield Uni (they seemed a one hit wonder but actually were brilliant live and some great song writing) Ask in another week and I might have a different list. For now I have left OMD, Blancmange, Sterephonics, Waterboys, Slade supported by Sensational Alex Harvey Band, etc etc off I always thought the good thing about growing up in Barnsley through the 70s+ was being in the centra or the Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester music triangle.
My brother met his now-wife at that gig, they now have two kids I like to think the Jarman brothers played a part in that.
