He has some things to say about Barnsley Council I can tell you, spending big money on a new town hall when there was abject poverty all around.

Is that in The Road to Wigan Pier? I've been aware of the book for as long as I can remember (funny title - an inland town having a pier) and I knew it was about social deprivation and that (I assumed in Lancashire), but I've never read it and I always thought it was a novel. It wasn't until yesterday that I learned the true nature of it. Is there much about Barnsley in it? Is it any good?

If you ever do go to Wigan Pier try this pub, it was a good pint and the food was decent too. Mind you it was 2011 when we went through on the narrowboat.

Must just add, Wigan pier is not a pier at all, just a loading wharf !

It's excellent, as relevant today as always.

He lived in Sheffield and Barnsley to do research.

Interesting points - the amount of sugar consumed and the role of the working mens institute.
