I feel like Ryan Goggs gets overlooked a lot these days. I’m assuming it’s because of his disgusting behaviour off the pitch but he doesn’t seem to get discussed much on TV when they talk about the premier league greats. Some of the performances late in his career as a central midfielder were outstanding. Fergie would rest him on a weekend & he’d drop some incredible performance on a Tuesday or Wednesday night against one of the best sides in Europe at around 38 years old.
Alf Ramsey never played for Portsmouth. He played most of his football for Spurs, after moving there from Southampton. It was when Ramsey came to Oakwell with Spurs that he was, according to Parkinson, given the runaround by our Scottish international, Johnny Kelly. My dad always waxed lyrical about Kelly. Arthur Kaye, Barnsley lad who played right wing for us in the late 50s and played for England U23 and for the Football League team, before leaving to become understudy to Stanley Matthews at Blackpool, must certainly rank among our own best wingers of all time.
I liked Johnny McCann, very skilful left winger who made the Scotland B team and played at the same time as the excellent Arthur Kaye was on the other wing in the late 50s.
The stories I've heard about the first 2, make them both sound like mythical creatures mate. Seen bits and bobs obviously but would love to have seen them in the flesh!
Another vote here. Favourite player I've watched live by some distance. He seemed all about pure skill and ball control, rather than outright speed. I loved Revie's crack that he could run across snow and not leave footprints!
Jairzinho. I’m old enough to remember him rip defenders apart in that outstanding Brazilian World Cup winning side.
I’m thinking of wrong bloke. Striker at West Ham. They had a good winger called Trevor though, as did Forest, and they both played for England.
And remember one of the fastest curly perms in the First Division, in those days lol. Graham Rix at Arsenal, as the traditional number 11.
I remember an away game at Bradford when Disco put on a masterclass in wing play. So much so that they subbed their left back quite early on as he was being roasted, but the new guy faired no better. Was a great performance from him.
