49:05 seconds in why does it sound as though I can hear either set of fans singing matching on together?
I was there (with my Dad).......Danny Wilson was truly shocking that day and didn't find a red shirt with a pass all afternoon. Can remember atmosphere being pretty special in last 2 minutes but I really can't recall the pitch invasions. Some proper REDS players in that team : David Currie, Andy Ramell, Owen Archdeacon, Gerry Taggart.
Yep, we definitely did but I really can only remember this chant in 1980's and not 1990's. Now totally synonymous with Leeds and that's enough for me!
Like I say, before my time. Glad we don't sing it now though. That was my 1,000th post and I didnt realise. Wasted it talking about Leeds. I feel violated.
Seems everything pre Davey years seems to be embarrasing to you? Away days back then **** all over the poor showing we have these days. I never did sing the Leeds song, mind. Couldn't understand why we did, it was quickly killed off.
Don't know where you get that idea from? Only reason I said it's embarrassing is because of the Leeds connection to that song, and we all hate Leeds don't we. I'd pay a lot of money to be able to go to matches before my time with propper terracing and propper football grounds. I hate how football is now, but love my club.
Looking back, the pitch invasions were out of order, but put in context, we were 23rd in the league at the time, and that cup run sparked us to stay up. Me & EastStander got tickets for the home end before shuffling into the away end before kick off. It was a shocking performance, but an amazing 2 mins at the end.
Tell yer what made me smile, watching that YouTube clip, is Gerry Taggart (centre half) wanting to receive ball and running forward with it or making a forward pass down flanks. Didn't see much of this during King Keith's reign did we? Actually the team of that time (circa 1994) wasn't a bad un.
The team wasn't bad, we just had a pathetic manager in Viv Anderson. Thankfully, he decided the challenge of being No.2 to Brian Robson at Boro was too much to turn down.
My first full season was 1990 and I vividly remember 'Marching on together' being sung at home matches over the next season or two.
Thought exactly the same, Tagg's showing for every ball and running forward, wish he was 21 again and available, just what we need.
Apologies you used the words cringy and tragic, suppose like you say you weren't there. But l probably celebrated those 2 goals more than the next league goal we scored. Like l've said the FA Cup back then was probably bigger than the league games, cracking ties against Liverpool(h)/Man City(A)/Oldham(A)/Everton(A) etc. Putting it into context those cup games were bigger and better games than the game when we beat Liverpool reserves at Anfield in my eyes and we lost all four of em. That's how much shine the FA Cup's lost with teams fielding their youngsters/reserves these days.
I always remember Taggs doing that. A lot of folk forget about his forays forward. Remember him against Dominic Matteo once. He'd already burst forward, when he met Matteo. He nudged him continuously about 5 or 6 times, still running, just knocking Matteo further back each time before slipping Eaden in who put it into the 'under construction' Ponty End. Eaden was booed. Ahhhhhhhh, memories.
Ran on three times myself, aye the pich invasions were a bit naff considering the opposition but you have remember we were in the bottom 3 at the time,we were ******* *****,the team got dogs abuse and deserved it although wilsons was over the top and with 2minutes left on the clock we were getting knocked out of the cup by frigging bromsgrove the relief when those 2 goals went in was unreal, that's why we went a bit mental, loved away days back.its all a bit **** these days.
Marching On Together Was sang on a regular basis once Allan Clarke was appointed player/manager in 1978. Bringing in Norman Hunter twelve months later reinforced the Leeds United connections. However, the gap between us & Leeds in those days was huge, so there was no rivalry. We hadn't been in the same Division as them, or either of the Sheffield clubs for that matter, since the 1950's.
Teams always used to nick other club's songs and change the words. Even Rotherham had their own version of the Greasie chip butty song. Leeds United released the original record under Don Revie when they were in their prime at the top of League 1 so there was no Leeds/Barnsley rivalry whatsover - they were the big city club we used to go watch if Barnsley didn't have a game. "We love you reds. reds, reds" sounded quite good back then but obviously we now have the rivalry and ditched it. Also remember us singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" against Bradford City which sounded tremendous.
