How do you create enough rubbish to need 2 bins?

 

Here in Harrogate it is black bin for rubbish and blue bin and bag for recycling.

Black still out since last Friday, blue just put out for what is supposed to be collected tomorrow. Had a text telling us to leave black out and it will be collected hopefully by 5pm tomorrow. Whether that means blue won't be, Jah only knows.

I have had 2 bins since i moved in, 1 went missing or went in the back of the wagon i dont know.
So i rung them and asked for another who went over some questions and i told them then i had another bin they told me to use that and they would send me some bags until the new bins came into stock and would send me one over straight away.They said its unusal to have 2 bins but if i was paying for my second one or it was there when i moved in the house then there isnt a problem.
Nothing about a permit or anything.

But the man did quote unless you have a disabled child or children you can not have more than 1 bin.

To be fair a lot of people where i live have multiple bins, brown mainly but some do have multiple black bins.

 

Brown bins which have been out for a week on Mount Vernon Road finally emptied this morning, AND they've taken additional bags of waste.
Now to get the grey bins due today emptied...

 

Bit of inside info for everyone from a family member who works as a bin man for Barnsley Council. Here are a few selected quotes.

- Remember last week when councils didn't grit side roads? Remember how bad they were? Well try driving 20 tonnes of steel down said road, or dragging 80kg of bin across black ice and snow. One of the blokes at work slipped and has fractured his wrist. He's only been set on for 3 weeks, so is only entitled to 3 weeks full pay on sick. So he'll be back before its healed, or he'll have to go to half pay

- Regarding catch up. They empty around 30000 bins a day, and he reckons they left around a quarter of work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday last week. So that's about 25000 bins left over those three days. That's a hell of a lot of catch up work, when collections need to carry on too. Usually its agency staff who do the catch up, as the regular lads are working on their own route. So that's why you might get a grumpy bloke doing the catch up - he's not got a regular job and is trying to earn coin.

- Then, the following week you'll be on a different collection. As in if it was domestic bin last Monday when snow was bad, when this Monday came round for your recycling - that wagon couldn't empty both because they'd be going to different disposal sites. So that's why it's seemingly bizarre why they'll empty one and not the other.

What I will say is that he hates snow. Hates it. It puts them behind in their work, and gets them hammered on social media or by the public. At the end of the day, it's a bin. It's not life or death, although it can be if risks are taken in bad weather with vehicles as big as what's involved

 

Excellent summary Fonzie. Amazed they managed to empty any bins on the days immediately after the snow fall. I was more concerned with workers losing a few days pay through no fault of their own. Hopefully the contractors/ council can see their way to helping out any employee who might have hurt themselves trying to get a job done.
