A large number of Barnsley fans like to sing “f*ck the Pope” in the we all hate Leeds scum ditty. I remember being outside the ground against Leeds a few years back and there were large gangs of Barnsley fans wandering round singing that line looking for trouble. For years I sat next to a guy we got on really well, went to his house and met up loads, then one day at a game he shouted at, I think it must have been one of our ex-Celtic lads - “ you fking useless Catholic *******”. I pointed out to him I was Catholic - he was pretty mortified and embarrassed. I really feel for Muslims, they are often easily identifiable and take a lot more of this crap unfortunately. Peoples ignorance of the history of this country is frightening, but a lot of it is wilful ignorance - they choose the narrative which suits them, and this goes for both sides. FWIW I’ve met some really sound Rangers fans and Celtic fans, but the sectarian nonsense is very sad, and when you hear it from Barnsley fans it makes me question why I bother going. Also it makes people complaining about fans singing about the miners strike seem a little OTT in comparison.
