  1. Yes, I was there as well, all optimistic following promotion

The Reds had a superb season the year before, promoted from the old Fourth Division with Luton, Crewe and Hartlepool (the latter's first time up to the Third Division under an up and coming young manager called Brian Clough. Big Winnie had scored 15 goals for us from centre half and we had a classy, ex First Divison centre forward in Jimmy Robson (ex-Burnley) - very shrewd bit of business who was probably the final piece in the promotion jigsaw.
I only vaguely remember the Barrow match but I know it was a hot day and a big crowd went away disappointed having lost the unbeaten home record immediately - we had gone through the previous season without a home defeat. I know Barrow are way down the food chain now but, in 1968, they were a very capable side at Third Division level. They were certainly too good for us that day. I think Allen Bradbury scored one of our goals, possibly both of them.
This was a GOOD time to be a Barnsley fan having gone through a very lean period in the 1960s up until then. 1966 was very nearly the death of the club (see, it HAS happened before!) and we were only saved by two generous local businessmen - Geoff Buckle and Ernest Dennis. A modest £10,000 investment saved the club - it was all spent on two forwards (Barrie Thomas and Johnny Evans). The club moved away from the brink and started a steady climb back upwards, only for it to go all wrong again in the mid-seventies. And so on, and so on.
You see....nothing changes, except the size of the transfer fees and players wages :) Oh, and the ground of course....
