RE: birdwell club Well, we'll see. Can't hurt to make your feelings known though - write to t' Chron, that sort of thing. You never know, once the ball starts rolling...
Agree in part mate. Something like Leadmill in Tarn centre would be just about right in my book. But then, if you look around there are already places that could cater for such gigs, there just does not appear to be the will to do it. The Theatre (Wellington St......that's if it still exists!) is more that capable of putting on decent bands..... .....As for the council, why should it be up to them? Why should they have to make sure Barnsley has a decent gig venue? For fecks sake, they can't even get the introduction of green bins right! Personally, the only involvement I'd want the council to have would be the granting of the drinks licence. OOB.
RE: birdwell club Yeah I always think the best thing to do is to spk to the elected representatives first...then make sure the issue is discussed in the amongst the community as loud as posible. What do u think about the situation mate....would u write to the Chronc?
RE: Agree in part mate. Because matey its their job to promote the towwn and get the best facilities for their electors whom they represent! If we want better facities they should be out there doing there best to ensure we have them! If not our elected representatives to whom we have given mandate to represent us then
Disagree mate.. A gig venue should be a business run by businessmen/women who are independant of thought and mind, and not run by people with an underlying political agenda. Drinks licence only I'm affraid. OOB.
RE: Disagree mate.. Oh yeh I agree with that entirely...what our reps should be doing is encouraging the setup of venues etc...making Barnsley good place to run a gig venue...if a town of Barnsley's size can't attract business to do it then we need to look at why!
We had what could have been a fantastic venue. It was called the Civic Theatre. Unfortunately it was council owned, and it shut. Aye. Local authorities eh. Pure comedy at it's best and worst, with three thousand miles of red tape thrown in for good measure at every turn. And don't forget our esteemed leaders (and by that I don't mean the councillors, the ones NOT elected are in charge!) know best because....because....because........... OOB.
RE: We had what could have been a fantastic venue. Aye...But no other northern townof our size has no cinema...no theatre ...no hotel....no proper gig venue in the town centre...Roll on remaking Barnsley it needs remaking....
RE: birdwell club Excuse my ignorance, but what has a gig venue and a cinema got to do with politicians? Are we saying we should vote other than Labout unless we get decent bands and a wider choice of films in town?
Aye. It does need Remaking, and I'm right behind the idea..... .....apart from the halo. That's just laughable. But then, what do you expect from a council leader who cow-tails to the thoughts and ideas of an arcitect who spends most of his time in Europe? The Angel of the North is a modern landmark that will last the test of time. The Halo landmark above our town will last until someone decides it's time for lights out! Right ideas, wrong answers as usual.....as always. OOB.
RE: birdwell club lol...no mate. What Im saying is its the council's job to bring us the best ameneties they can. That doesnt mean them running gig venues and cinemas, thats jus daft mate and I wont insult your inteligence in suggesting u thought I meant that. Howver it is the councils duty to make the town an attractive investment so that busness will locate here and provide such facilities. Now clearly Barnsley has become unattractive if we cannot support a solitary cinema, hotel or theatre. It is not that there is no demand...we have a population of about 220 000+ clearly we need a cinema and a theatre, although the population is forced to put its money into the ameneties of neighbouring towns.
RE: Aye. It does need Remaking, and I'm right behind the idea..... Me too matey...I just hope it all happens soon. I f it all comes off it will be fantastic.
RE: birdwell club We have two smaller theatres - The Lamproom and The Academy - that are doing well, and we have decent town centre venues such as The Theatre that could hold really good gigs if they wanted. The problem is the private investors who obviously see it as too much of a gamble. Bands want paying, PR companies want paying, promoters want paying and staff want paying, and there's no guarantee that Barnsley town centre on a weekday night would draw the crowds to cover it. It's a culture thing, and it's one where we need to start small and build up over some years. Barnsley is a weekend town, and then it's for pub crawls. No point trying to compete with this right now by going the whole hog and spending X amount of million on a good venue if it's going to peak at half-full a couple of times a year. As for the cinema, with the best will int he world, the Odeon was a total dive. No wonder it wasn't making money. We do need a cinema, but we need better than that. I agree that Barnsley needs to become a more attractive investment, and it will be in time. Fingers crossed.
RE: birdwell club Yeah I wouldn't really class the Lamproom as a proper theatre, but I take your point. With regard to the Odeon I agree it wasn't a high standard cinema....but it was better than nothing. Now the many, many Barnsley folk will be left traveling to Penistone...Meadowhall...Doncaster or Wakefield to watch the latest films and spending their cash there rather than in Barnsley. Its a poor show.
