Yeah but when you say ‘hooligans’ people know which branch of knob you’re referring to. Knobheads come in other colours and sizes.
In those days the police had a HQ between the old kop and the west stand. That dog was released from the kop end and ran the length of the pitch and took down one of their hooligans in the penalty box in front of the Ponte. The whole stadium (except the kop obviously) cheered that dog as it ran across the pitch. The guy was crapping himself, with good reason. After the dog had got him he sat down and the dog let go. Just sat next to him, pleased as punch. It was hilarious. IIRC this happened either before kickoff or at half time. The players weren’t out.
Before kick off mate. They came on when the Ponty was quite empty. What year would it have been? I’m sure I was still quite young. Would it have been about 83?
I don’t think I suggested there was loads about us. When I posted the link there had only been a handful of posts, some complementary. I just thought others might be interested in their match day thread. I always like to see the oppositions view point. If it’s not your cup of tea fair dos.
19 March 1983 or 10 September 1983. I think it was probably the latter because we lost that game 2-0 and I seem to remember my enjoyment of the dog race incident was tarnished by the result. Remember it being warm.
