Sopranos Twin Peaks Boardwalk Empire First few seasons of Dexter All those mentioned by Dyson and Thrappo For comedy it's got to be Curb, though.
Dexter. Original and absolutely superb. Michael C Hall is absolutely brilliant. The crowning glory so far has been season 4 (co-starring John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer) which was just downright terrific. Probably some of the best television I've ever seen.
Agreed poet, Dexter is one of my favourites, season 7 looks set to be awesome!!! Also, Fringe is supposed to be good.
Agree with most of those mentioned. One nobody has talked about is Battlestar Galactica (re-imagined series). I've managed to persuade several people to give it a try and everyone is of the same opinion - one of the best drama series ever. Don't be put off thinking it is just sci-fi cos it is not. Covers every issue you could possibly think of with a brilliant and satisfying narrative. Give it a go.
My mate has recommended Battlestar galactica, will definitely give it a go once I find the whole blu ray series for a reasonable price. Six feet under is also quality viewing, a bit depressing, but very addictive.
Ken Loach at the BBC - cathy Come Home, Price of Coal etc - essential stuff and a bargain at around £20!
I never really got into curb. For me Arrested Development is better. Comedies I watch: The League The office Parks and recreation Workaholics Community (maybe the best of the newer shows) Got to love Trailer Park Boys too!
The Hour was brilliant. The Shadow Line too. When the BBC want be they can be brilliant. Just wish they had the balls to commission long series like American tv Loved Treme too from the makers of The Wire
Quality show, forgot to list it! I found it to be genuinely gripping and exciting, well worth watching
Homeland is excellent, new series should be starting in America any time now, may have already started so there are ways and means of getting episodes. I thought 'Touch' with Keifer Sutherland was quite good, not sure if that's been given a second series though. Older stuff - I only watched '24' last year, hearing about the concept of it put me off but then I finally sat down and went through about 200 episodes and feature length specials in the space of about two months. Likewise with Prison Break, can remember one series being a bit dodgy, may have been 2nd or 3rd...got bored during the fourth series and didn't watch the rest until a while later but it did get better. If you like Sci-fi then you could try 'Fringe' that's nearly coming to an end now, fifth series just started in America. I've generally watched the episodes weekly but I don't think it has that element of, "I'll just watch one more" which is what you generally want from a box-set, there is a back-story to it but each episode is generally a complete story in itself. Breaking bad - I'm slowly getting through it, it's not bad but I only put it on as a last resort. Dexter - Watched the first two episodes and decided I couldn't watch any more, found Dexter himself to be a bit of a **** - could be that in the first two episodes he never stops eating, watching people eat just isn't entertaining to me! A lot of the above is available on Netflix to stream, don't be silly going out spending a daft amount on DVDs that you'll never watch again.
Game of Thrones The Wire Oz The Shield or funnies... Peep Show IT Crowd Black Books Father Ted I'm Alan Partridge Arrested Development
Even the Wire, Deadwood, Arrested Development, Game of Thrones and Sopranos? The Americans do churn out some crap but those are all outstanding.
