Sounds like he could be a good prospect on a free.
Can play left wing as well as full back, which he did for half an hour for Liverpool against Chelsea back in 2013.

Made 9 starts (7 league, 2 Capital One) in just over two months for Swindon, before being called back by Liverpool from what should have been a season long loan.

as the window has closed can we actually sign him now?

if Liverpool have released him, WHEN did they release him. Did they hold his registration until recently? if so will we have to wait till January to sign him if indeed we do.

Have they released him though, and when did they do that? Are they still paying him a wage? Surely that matters?

As long as we don't sign Alan Purple-Lipped Leeds Scum Smith, I'm all for it!

They didn't release him, they offered him a contract which he turned down.

No, they offered him a contract and he turned it down, however because the offered him a deal they'd be due compensation, like us and Butterfield.

Think this lad came on against Arsenal last was season & was seen as an attempt by Rodgers to show he needed more players.

Anyway, no idea if he's any good but not having a contract in December doesn't mean a lot, I'm sure he has no shortage of suitors & will be picking & choosing the best opportunity

We should sign a random Jones or two so the Chronicle could run the headline 'Alas Smith and Jones'

Re: as the window has closed can we actually sign him now?

What if the paying of compensation puts potential suitors off from signing him? He could be out of work and unpaid for 18 months or more.

Can't get my head around how that can happen if Liverpool aren't paying him owt. I thought for the compensation to be enforced then Liverpool would have to carry on paying him his original wage, if they aren't then he's effectively been released.

Can't imagine Liverpool would want much, if any compensation. Don't think it would be an issue.

Would be happy with this signing. I remember seeing him a couple of times last season and he's a better player than George Smith based on those few performances plus we need another left sided defender.
