was once the best pub in Bradford bar none ....... I practically lived there. I lived on the little street opposite and could get there in 10 seconds
Re: Rightly or wrongly ..... Beautifully composed Andy. I too went to Oxford that day. We stopped over for the night as we were going to watch Yorkshire at Grace Road the next day. Had a heavy session in Oxford centre and didn't have an inkling of the disaster till the next day when I bought a paper and didn't see the awful images till that Sunday evening when returning home. Will never forget John Helm's heart wrenching commentary on the YTV programme that Sunday night.
Re: Rightly or wrongly ..... John Helm is the president of the Cricket Team me and my lad play for. He seldom talks of it.
Re: Rightly or wrongly ..... I only saw that footage (with John Helm doing commentary) a couple of years ago. Shocking stuff.
Yeah it was a nice gesture and something all clubs should do. I go to Bradford a fair bit with a group of friends of mine who also live in Selby and the feeling I get from them is a bitterness that the fire and people involved in it don't get as much respect as some other football tragedies.
Re: Rightly or wrongly ..... Imagine it affected him quite badly. He wasn't a hard-nosed news journalist, but a sports commentator who was thrust into terrible tragedy.
Re: Rightly or wrongly ..... RIP to the 56......If there is no recognition this afternoon then its disgusting......Well written Andy, so sad...I was in my local pub The Plough-West Melton that afternoon and it came up on either World of Sport or Grandstand which was on every saturday afternoon in the pub...seem to recall a strange feeling of disbelief, although not vivid memories........Probably due to drink...again RIP.
I completely agree Andy, its an embarrassment that they haven't done anything by way of a silence. Having said that Bradford aren't really that important in the grand scheme of the football pyramid.
Maybe I am just being cynical but I have never felt that it got the coverage that other disasters got. It was a real human tragedy and the dead deserve a minutes silence.
You are not cynical at all Mario but 100% correct. Lives were lost and no life is worth more than any other. Surely the standing of the football club of which the victims supported should not in anyway devalue the tragedy which occurred. They memory of the victims of Bradford should be honoured as long as football exists. But will it?
I would hope not because it would be unforgivable if the size of a club did influence the importance of an event in the eyes of the FA.
Very moving, and brings back plenty of memories. I too went to Oxford. Though I don't remember hearing the news til we were home. I also remember the harrowing commentary from John Helm. As you say, it's unbelievable it doesn't get the same recognition as the Hillsborough Tragedy. RIP to those who lost their lives. As an aside - Billy Hamilton - didn't he famously score for Northern Ireland in the World Cup?
Not sure. Listening to Derby v Brighton play off and the crowd have just held a minute's applause on the 56th minute...nice touch. Maybe this happened during the Prem games?
Just seen that on twitter. As you say, nice touch. I don't watch the PL games unless Stones is laiking so no idea if they did similar. You'd hope so. At Anfield especially.
