Good old Nudger

You give credit to Dennis for doing what he had to do.

Oh, and so there were no grants available then ?

RE: Good old Nudger................hi, and good old Nudger remembers the ground before redevelopment

That money for those players could have been squanded but it was poured back into redeveloping the ground and its training facilities.
I have said already that John Dennis made some mistakes towards the end of his era. We all know this.

BUT !!! ........Look at the WELL and then look at Donny and Rotherham and the like, who were our close rivals in those days and no one can say that JD did a bad job while in charge

Donny have even got a brand new stadium and it still dosen't come anywhere near as good as the WELL
........23,009 all seater capacity........in door training facilities................academy...........well done JD (clap)

The point DH is making, I think, is that

JD did not really have the choice of NOT developing the ground, he rather had to. Yes Oakwell is far better than Millmoor and Keepmoat but we were in a higher division at the time so were compelled to act sooner.

    RE: itv digital hmmmm...

we were relegated in 2002 so therefore would not have qualified for the £3m as a second tier club. I don't think ITV digital was relevant in our case.

    pff

donny and rovrum were not in a league to which all seater stadia requirements applied. We had to do it.

We also had to have an acadamy (as part of prem? rules)

Is JD thi mate or summat?

To be fair these lads would be playing in the Championship

If it wasn't for the influx of foreign players in the Premier league.

    So do I

And at the time of the Taylor report Donny and Rotherham were in a lower league than us and so didn't have the same disciplines applied with regard to timescale for building/re building.

You applaud Dennis for selling Tiler etc to build Oakwell as we see it. Yet ignore the fact that he was compelled to take such action. The same John Dennis who's 'few mistakes' very nearly led to the gates being shut at Oakwell and the ground demolished.

You should talk to a few shareholders, creditors of the club from the time. Try and broaden your viewpoint. You seem nonchalant to the fact that the club nearly went out of business. Although I suspect that's more to do with your narrow view of the situation than anything else.

    RE: pff......................yer but

When JD took over Donny, Rovrum, Chesterfield were our close rivals
JD built the club into a postion where he could then spend money on the ground
He didn't sell these players and give us a tin pot Keepmoat stadium did he................he could have done - but he didn't

And no, I am not mates with JD, I do say hello to the bloke when I see him and thats about it
But give credit where it is due
Another example............Shep. He made some ballax of running the club while in charge but generally he did a good job in stearing the club back onto an even ground..........so credit where it is due

We have been very very lucky in the people at Barnsley that have ran the club

RE: Producing quality professional players is the aim from the Academy ..

£250,000 a year for all the maintenance etc. Would be silly to close down and sell off the land. It takes a few good players to sell for big money and thats our money back. The trouble is who run the academy, a old school teacher from Donny doesn't help. We need to look at getting in better coaching staff further down the ladder from the first and reserve teams then maybe we may see some improvement. But as for the kids, hundreds use the classes each week and these kids are becoming more and more interested in BFC and not the big 4. With the new ST offers there will be even more kids down there next season. We have to look to the future and virtually all of the teams in the top two leagues have a football academy.

Wasting your time Dirk ......... Nudger obviously .....

...... wasn't at the shareholders meeting at Brooklands when a certain new 'owner' asked the shareholders to pledge their shares to him (for nowt) 'for the good of the club', whilst for some reason all the exits were blocked by guys bigger than me with flat noses ............ we must all thank John Dennis for that when we see him as well as all his other 'good work' for the club

    To be fair though mate

He could have taken the cheap option and just bolted seats to the Ponty end, made a crap one tier stand where the Brewery was using the concrete terrace already there and bolted seats onto the cop and terrace. I know the ground needed upgrading, but it was Dennis who had the forethought to build three fantastic new stands rather than just paper over the cracks.

Far be it from me to agree with Nudger, but I don't think Dennis was all bad. His management when we had nowt was exemplary. The way he presided over the transformation of Oakwell was first class. He brought Machin in when relegation looked a certainty and sacked him when he'd took us as far as he could. Viv Anderson didn't work out, but without him we wouldn't have had Danny Wilson. And he backed Wilson enough to get us to the premier league. In 1997 I thought him the best chairman a club could possibly have.

It then turned nasty. He failed to properly manage our success and his decision to take us into administration without going first to the shareholders will always baffle me. Do the latter failings cloud the earlier success? They certainly will for some as we nearly went out of business and Dennis was responsible for that, but I'll never forget the 90s when he was chairman. It was a cracking time to support Barnsley.

Had Darren Barnard scored that penalty at Wembley we may still be in the Premiership now. That's how close he was to being a success.

    Well balanced post...

    ... with which I agree 100%.

Also think when we were relegated from the prem the fans' expectations weren't 'managed' as well.

I think that clubs in the third tier received £300K

and that would have been what we would have received in 2002/03 ?
