RE: BFC were after one Michael Thwaite PROMISING Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite this week turned his back on a move to England to sign a long-term contract with Poland's leading club, believing his World Cup chances will be enhanced by joining eastern Europe's football revolution. Thwaite, 22, has signed a five-year deal with Polish champions Wisla Krakow - rejecting offers from lower-division English clubs Nottingham Forest and Barnsley, as well as clubs in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. Thwaite hopes to leave his current Romanian club, FC National Bucharest, before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, but a dispute over the transfer fee could delay the move until the end of the European season. Either way, Thwaite is excited by the prospect of moving to Poland, where he will be coached by Romanian great Dan Petrescu. The former Chelsea fullback has just joined Wisla Krakow and, after being impressed by Thwaite's form in the Romanian league, vowed to make him his first major signing. Money has poured into eastern European leagues over the past five years, and clubs are now able to sign players from all over the world. Thwaite is happy to ride the wave. "The Australian mentality is to rush to England, but I don't agree with that," Thwaite said. "Because of the television exposure, the English league is pumped up back in Australia. "But going to England now didn't suit my intentions at all. I'm 100 per cent clear in my mind that what I've done is the right thing. I can improve myself as a player and as a person. This gives me the option to play against big teams and big players, and I'm convinced it will brighten my prospects for the World Cup." Thwaite has been with FC National Bucharest for almost three seasons since leaving Marconi Stallions, playing alongside compatriots Wayne Srhoj, Ryan Griffiths and - until the start of this season - Jon McKain. Petrescu, who coached Romanian first-division rivals FC Sportul Studentesc before joining Wisla Krakow on January 1, has spent the past two months convincing Thwaite to follow him to Poland. Wisla Krakow have won the past three Polish championships but have failed to progress to the group stage of the Champions League. When the league resumes in March, they will take a one-point lead over second-placed Legia Warsaw into the second half of the season. "I'm going to the top team in Poland, one which competes regularly in the [preliminary] Champions League, and I'm going to play for a coach who made it clear he wants me," Thwaite said. "Petrescu is obviously a big name in football - he has achieved everything I want to achieve. And as a defender who needs developing, I know he can help me. It's a secure contract, the city is absolutely beautiful, and I just couldn't be happier with my decision." It was a decision also made with the national team in mind. "I had a long talk to Guus [Hiddink] in Argentina [before the first leg of the World Cup play-offs in Montevideo], and he wanted me to make the progression to a club which was playing regularly in European competition," Thwaite said. "I took that advice on board. At the moment I'm a fringe player for the Australian team, and hopefully moving to a bigger club will help me. Despite some media talk that I would get a game against Uruguay, I never really felt it would happen. After all, I've only played one game for my country. "Guus went with experienced defenders against Uruguay, and obviously he's been proved right. But I see it as a new ball game now, and if I keep my head down, work hard, and play frequently, then I'm hoping spots are up for grabs. I'm definitely putting my hand up for selection."

well, there you go.... and I'd say that Thwaite has some influence with Jacob and Petrescu.... it's all about mates and your network.. good luck to 'em. Jacob has done the right thing all along. His attitude has been bang on.
Me too Promotion chances like this don't come around very often. I know we have to run the club as a business and I know that if a player wants to leave there's little point in keeping him here and making him unhappy, but sometimes you've just got to say that a player is too important to be allowed to leave at this stage of the season. I think Burns falls into that category and judging by the amount of games he's played, Ritchie must think that too. Can't imagine Jacob wants to take his wife and new born off for a Polish winter.
Me neither , but if you get the chance for Champions League Footy, or at least the UEFA Cup with the chance of progressing then you are going to think about it.</p>
Also I would rather fetch a new born up anywhere rather than this country, everytime you put the news on there a mugging or somebody being murdered ,all I can say is good luck to the lad and his family
thats generally what the news reports on i doubt that poland is the safest country in the world to be honest mate
