    Green Grocers v Supermarket

There we go...now we can all get involved :p

Is veg cheaper at Jack Halls than ASDA?

Don't eat much veg myself as I think its cruel to boil plants alive - they have feelings too you know ,just ask Prince Charles :nails:

Chips are not included in the above statement :D

Used to go there a lot and I think it's very variable quality, good one day and poor the next, that's what you get with a low price butchers though I suppose.

I was a butcher for 15 years mate, i cant understand how anyone could not want to eat a nice piece of good quality meat?
I do not mean these ready made meals, where you have not got a clue what it is, I mean good quality, well hung and reared on a real farm , not in a cage. I like to know what I am eating and that is why I always get my meat from a proper butcher, someone that knows what they are selling and not a just a counter hand that tries to baffle and ******** you .
Sorry if I upset you with the dislike, but I have given you plenty of likes too!

I know, I'm second only to the nicest man in Barnsley on the likes steaks(!) thanks mainly to you and my fellow aggro-Liberals.

Unfortunately, there isn't enough good ethically sourced meat to go round. Hence the horse fiasco and the poor quality, high risk imported meats that hit takeaways nationwide.

I decided a long time I wasn't going to be part of the enormous, aggressive and inherently cruel industry that supplies the massive demand that people now have. We all know it exists and it is probably the antithesis of how a good butcher like yourself went about their profession. Unfortunately, while people insist on eating meat 3 or 4 times a day, seven days a week, it will go on. I think if people just ate less meat, it could all be ethically farmed and less of a global pollutant. The whole problem is not helped by endless cooking programmes.

I try not to moralise, but as when someone tried to get a rise out of me recently, I posted a link to a film so devastatingly brutal it had people seriously questioning their role in the industry they are buying into. This is why I started self-depracating to ease the tension, I think Kanecat and I were settling down to Snow Leopard, Condor eggs and chips that night!

So as a contribution to the thread: yes - independent, quality family butchers selling ethical/locally sourced produce over supermarket/factory farming any day. BRING BACK RATIONING TOO!

Never buy meat from supermarket. Don't know if its more expensive or not its just nicer and better quality from local butcher

I would just like to add, dont buy Beef if it is bright red, get some that is darker red in colour, better if it has a little marbled fat running through it. The darker colour means it has been hung for longer, giving the enzymes in the meat longer to work and make it more tender and it will not take as long to cook. The fat will help keep it moist and tender as well. If you can but Beef with some fat on it, cook it like that then remove it afterwards, this will prevent the meat shrinking and keep it moist and better for eating. I know some will say they are wasting money buying the fat, but I can assure you that the joint you end up with will be larger than if you bought a really well trimmed joint.

Use Morrison's quite a bit. Pork loin steaks other week at half price were good, just finished last of those. Had a nice shoulder of lamb last weekend that was on offer. Like you say = got to look for the offers....had some sirloin a while back that was on offer, I was lucy to get some as one guy was putting a dozen packs in his trolley!

Got a pork belly from Morrison's best l've ever tasted, few hours in oven and it was falling apart. Off to the tarn meat market this weekend, better value for the steaks.
