So so many, felt like every day was a bucket list job. I'd built up so many things in my head I was sure I'd be disappointed, but everything delivered. Stand outs in California were Alcatraz, cable cars, and the drive from San Francisco to Big Sur. What a stretch of coastline! Stayed at Big Sur Lodge and had a beer and burger amongst the huge trees sat at the bar which was a crazy contrast after 3 days in San Francisco. The only downside is highway 1 is closed due to landslides just south of there so we had to detour in land to Pismo Beach. And it was poor weather in Pismo Beach. Cleared up though for Santa Barabara and Malibu, and for the last night in Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Have to admit I thought I'd be all alternative cool and prefer Seattle and Vancouver to San Francisco, giving it all the big its too touristy. But what a city. Absolutely intoxicating. Loved the contrast of the old early 20th century skyscrapers with the new. And stayed in the amazing Beacon Grand hotel. Seattle and Vancouver were amazing too. Saw a humpback whale fully breach too which was breathtaking. Cost of living out there was insane though. A beer and gin and tonic touching 30 dollars with tax and tip. We went to Death Valley in May. Second last day of the trip. Yes, it was very hot. But at Zabriske Point we starting hearing a strangle rumble. When we left we drove out towards Pahrump - through the edge of a thunderstorm and leaving Death Valley Junction we could see tornados touching down behind us. We just missed this - - filmed the same day.
