Spot on Supertyke is on his own with his original post. Of course Flicker made some mistakes. Even Sir Alex gets it wrong at times but he got a lot more right than wrong. He started with a side that already had both feet in leaguel 1, had one key wingback sold lost the other through injury, at times had an entire defence out to the extent he had to play a 19 year old player bought for the future. Lost key midfielders and had to play the same exhausted players twice a week for several weeks And still kept us up despite needing a record total of points to do it and super tyke has a dig because just once a result finally went our way. Whether he can work similar miracles next year remains to be seen it I won't have anyone knocking what he did in 20 games this season
Losing (at different points and for differing reasons) Davies, Stones, Golbourne, Hassell, Foster, Etuhu, Dawson, RNL, Delap now counts as good luck does it? Mate, whilst I can see a lot of sense in your initial post, there's a whole dollop of ***** above it that kind of rides roughshod over it. Each to their own, mind.
I think the post needs to be appreciated as a thought out post...not the destructive balls we used to hear from some WUM's. Thats not to say I agree with it,particularly the first paragraph....Flicker has had some luck(that Hill didn't),but not more than his fair share, some changes have been forced, some have worked brilliantly well..some not so..but what cannot be argued is that, had the league started when he took over Flitcroft has guided us to 4th in the table.I think that fact alone is an achievement far greater than that of any manager currently in the top 10 places The 4th paragraph is spot on and may be Flickers strongest point..but I genuinely believe no other manager could have achieved survival this term..even Mick McCarthy with a very expensive squad could only get within 4 points of Flitcroft.
Flitcroft didn't get lucky,he made good decisions. The best ones probably fetching Mellon, Scott, OGrady and Scotland in. As for Wilson being lucky with the 352 formation - the club had been playing that formation for years under Machin. Even the reserves were set up to play that way before Anderson un did it all.
Super tyke, to offer such a series of comments without any balanced view will certainly always read as controversial, especially where it has massive holes as yours does. So to start who are you comparing Flitcroft to. Bearing in mind how long he's been a manager, tactics have developed showing his ability to learn and change. I certainly haven't seen any major mistakes and the little ones have been corrected quickly as in when COG played wide and Marlon centre. He and many on here agree he is learning his trade. Secondly luck did play a big part but we didn't get any of the decisions like Sheffield Wed home (or further back vs Leeds away) and reward for pressure at Peterborough. Added to that the transfer departures and injuries many would say we fought against some bad luck. Yet we survived. His away vs home tactics, attack vs defend worked. Some blips on the way such as Bristol and Charlton but even the top managers have had those along the way. Looking at what he brought that other more experienced managers haven't over recent times, the ability to create solidarity with players, fans and the media. Also he has inspired everyone around the club, created passion age talks about a journey as did Hill but he actually showed true leadership with people wanting part of it. His signings have been pretty good on the pich and in the coaching team, and he has got the best from players on the fringe and now regulars Kennedy, Etuhu, Ruben etc. So when I look at the facts I struggle to see where his tactics got lucky, and where interest from other teams won't be forthcoming. Look no further than the other massive club down de road as a start.
Couldn't disagree more. I actually find it a bit disrespectful given the hard work put in by him, but I guess everyone's entitled to an opinion.
It is OK being controversial, provided you get your analysis right, and with respect, I do not think that your analysis is right. The team that Keith Hill put together would not have stayed up, mainly because the players were not good enough to stay up, but also because they had not gelled into a team. Flitcroft saw the problems and created a better team spirit by taking the players off on team building trips to Spain and St Georges. He also managed to recruit in certain very important areas. He brought in Scotland and O'Grady, without who's goals the team would have gone down in spite of the team building exercises. However, the team is not the finished article. In fact, there is a long way to go if we are to ensure that next season does not go the way of the previous seven. The team must be strengthened, and Fltcroft is not only right, he is wise to use his currently unassailable position to try to negotiate a change in policy with the board. If we continue to repeat the same mistakes as we have made in the past, our luck will eventually run out and we will be relegated. We must attract better players to the club than we have been able to do for the last 7 years. The casual supporters are fed up of watching year after year of struggle and declining attendances/revenue reflect this. The club must do something to arrest the spiral of decline. In David Flitcroft and his management team, BFC has at last found someone who it can trust to invest its resources wisely, and invest well. With the profits that have been made this season, it is the right time to release the tight financial controls that have been in place since Peter Ridsdale's spectacular failure, and put the belief back into the town that the team can make progress. If Flitcroft does not get that change, then he would be well advised to walk away from the job, because fighting on against the odds can only bring eventual failure, a poisoning of his relationship with the fans and a promising management career, nipped in the bud. If he does walk away, there should be no doubt in supporters minds just who should be held responsible.
I think his mistakes have been masked by him motivatig his team to work and graft harder than any side in the history of the game. I thought taking Mellis off yesterday and shoe horning Dawson in was wrong but we got a result. So what? We got bits of luck at the right time too but all in all it's deserved - he'll rightly go down as a bit of a hero regardless of the future. You reds.
not bad traits for a lucky man to have, oh wait, could they be the reason that our fortunes turned around, rather than luck ?
Wow, can't believe what I just read (although stopped 3/4 of way). How the hell do you get lucky in a 46 game season? We didn't rely on other teams keeping us up either. On Saturday, we gained a point if you dont forget and prior to the game, we were in the bottom 3 so how did anyone else keep us up u pillock. I'm fuming after what Supertykes put. A league table doesnt lie. U finish where u deserve to finish and luck doesn't come into it. December we were dead n buried. Beyond belief this.
Which would be fine if I was moaning. However I was actually saying that Flitcroft is the best manager Barnsley have had in living memory. If i'm the only person in Barnsley who thinks that after Golbournes injury when flitcroft had to come up with a plan B that he didn't make any mistakes and we didn't play poorly then so be it. At least i'm not an hypocrite though like lots of others seem to be because there were a LOT of people criticising at the time who now refuse to hear what THEY said.
finally someone who actually admits that he made mistakes and agree's that his motivational skills and hard work were enough to negate those mistakes. Reading posts from some others you'd think we won every game 27 nil with the opposition never having had a shot.
No one has ever said he's never made any mistakes. He just makes a lot less than other managers and is also wise enough to rectify his mistakes quickly, whether that's during the game or in time for the next game.
A lucky streak that saw us win 8 out of 9 games and draw the other which we dominated? Who exactly 'found us out'? We lost only 4 league games after he got the job permanently on Jan 13th! Only Charlton and Bristol beat us by more than one goal. Ridiculous post. If you're going to spout **** at least back it up with something.
